Is there something new regarding triceps brachii muscle insertion?

Abstract: Previous studies have questioned whether the triceps brachii muscle tendon (TBMT) has a double or single insertion on the ulna. Aiming to provide an answer, we describe the anatomy of the TBMT and review a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) series of the elbow. Methods: Forty-one elbows were dissected to assess the details of the triceps brachii insertion. Elbow plastination slices were analyzed to determine whether there was a space on the TBMT. Magnetic resonance imaging from the records of the authors were al… Show more

“…Second, we found the that there was a space between the deep and superficial layer (the lacuna) which presented higher (36.3%) at the specimens evaluation compare to those at the MRI evaluation (26.4%). Previous study from Akamatsu et al 13 dissected 41 en-balmed elbow specimens and found a space at the distal triceps brachii tendon insertion. Belentani et al 7 reported a split distal triceps insertion with an MRI observation which was not confirmed with histological evaluation.…”

“…The medial head forms the deep portion of the triceps inserted into the olecranon [85] and is mainly muscular at its insertion [86]. Some authors describe the space filled with fatty tissue between these attachments like "distal pretricipital space" on MRI sections and cadaver specimens [87]. The triceps muscle is innervated by the radial nerve.…”

“…Several clinically oriented anatomical studies aimed to define the architecture and insertional points of the tendon of the triceps brachii muscle (Akamatsu et al, 2020 ; Barco et al, 2017 ; Belentani et al, 2009 ; Madsen et al, 2006 ; Negrao et al, 2020 ; Wegmann et al, 2022 ). Such knowledge is highly appreciated in the surgical management of injuries to the tendon or other interventions concerning the elbow joint, such as fractures of the distal humerus and olecranon, elbow arthroplasty, and harvest of the olecranon graft in recurrent elbow instabilities (Barco et al, 2017 ).…”
