Use of silicon for skin and hair care: an approach of chemical forms available and efficacy

Abstract: Silicon is the second most abundant element on Earth, and the third most abundant trace element in human body. It is present in water, plant and animal sources. On the skin, it is suggested that silicon is important for optimal collagen synthesis and activation of hydroxylating enzymes, improving skin strength and elasticity. Regarding hair benefits, it was suggested that a higher silicon content in the hair results in a lower rate of hair loss and increased brightness. For these beneficial effects, there is g… Show more

“…It is difficult to directly combine probes with drugs but can be solved by loading drugs to a carrier that can be modified with targeting capability [36]. Previous studies have demonstrated that silicon is harmless to human, which has a daily intake and maintain the normal metabolisms [37,38] and MSN is a good drugs carrier [15]. Also, our nanoparticles had low toxicity to endothelial cells and macrophages that are two types of cells at the site of atherosclerosis [11].…”

“…Silicon penetrates the hair follicles, enters in the hair matrix, and makes the hair fibers thicker. Therefore, the higher the silicon quantity in the hair, the lower the extent of hair loss (32,33).…”
