Much remains to be learned about biological diversity, which constitutes a valuable natural resource. Due to the pressure that human activity has put on natural resources, biodiversity has been reduced, often unbeknownst to those responsible for that activity. Therefore, we aimed to perform a quantitative and qualitative analysis of periphytic algae in the Itupararanga reservoir, correlating the results with the physical and chemical characteristics of the water, as well as with climatic conditions. To that end, five samples were collected at four sampling stations in the Itupararanga reservoir during the year 2010. Aquatic macrophytes were collected with a 156-cm 2 frame, and the periphytic algae were scraped free of the macrophytes with a brush. Samples were fixed in formaldehyde and Lugol's solution for the qualitative and quantitative analyses, respectively. We identified 156 taxa belonging to eight classes, and the overall density was 10,200-171,800 individuals/mm 2 . The taxonomic composition and abundance of periphyton were found to be dependent on spatial and temporal factors, such as the type of substrate and the characteristics of the sampling site, as well as seasonal variations in the chemical and physical properties of the water.

This study aimed to document the Cosmarium (Desmiadiales, Zygnematophyceae) taxa at a subtropical stream located in an area adjacent to the Iguaçu National Park, an important environmental protection area in the further west of Paraná State. For this purpose, monthly samplings of periphytic material associated to Eleocharis minima Kunth were performed in the period of August 2012 to July 2013. This taxonomic inventory allowed the identification of 37 taxa at specific and infra-specific levels. There were 15 new records for Paraná State: Cosmarium bipunctatum Börgensen, C. clepsydra Nordstedt var. bicardia (Reinsch) Croasdale, C. crenatum var. crenatum Ralfs, C. difficile Lütkemüller var. dilatatum Borge, C. isthmochondrum var. isthmochondrum Nordstedt, C.obsoletum (Hantzsch) Reinsch var. obsoletum, C. ordinatum (Borge) West & West var. ordinatum, C.ornatum Ralfs var. ornatum f. ornatum, C. pseudoconnatum Nordstedt var. pluriradians Scott & Grönblad, C. pseudoretusum F. -(Periphytic desmids from five lagoons of the Federal District, Brazil: I -Genus Cosmarium Corda ex Ralfs). This study aimed a taxonomic survey on genus Cosmarium in five oligotrophic lagoons in the Federal District, Brazil: Lagoa Bonita, Lagoa Joaquim Medeiros, Lagoa do Cedro, Lagoa Taquara and Lagoa dos Gansos. Samples were realized between 2006 and 2009, by macrophytes squeezing and/or submerged substrates scraping; 18 samples were analyzed and deposited at the Herbarium of the University of Brasília. They were fixed in formalin solution (4%) and analized under 400× and 1000× magnification. Altogether 42 taxons were found. Among them, 30 are cited for the first time in the Federal District and probably eight for Brazil. Lagoa Bonita had the higher number of taxa (32)
