Carbon nanotubes as a novel drug delivery system for anticancer therapy: a review

Abstract: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were discovered in 1991 and shown to have certain unique physicochemical properties, attracting considerable interest in their application in various fields including drug delivery. The unique properties of CNTs such as ease of cellular uptake, high drug loading, thermal ablation, among others, render them useful for cancer therapy. Cancer is one of the most challenging diseases of modern times because its therapy involves distinguishing normal healthy cells from affected cells. Here, C… Show more

“…16 Recently, scientists have revealed several strategies, such as loading synthetic analogs from turmeric, designing metabolic inhibitors and liposomal formulations, and nanoparticles of curcumin, to overcome these problems. [17][18][19][20] Dendrosome was introduced as a novel neutral, amphipathic, and biodegradable nanocarrier for a gene delivery system in the authors' research group. 21,22 The high potential of dendrosome as a gene porter led to the hypothesis that it can be exploited as a vehicle for curcumin delivery.…”

“…Bu dezavantajlar arasında; hızlı topaklanma eğilimi, bazı zamanlarda hedef bölgeye gitmeden ilaç salımı yapma, suda çözünebilen moleküllerin yüklenmesin-deki zorluk ve bazı taşıma sistemlerinin üretiminde-ki zorluk yer almaktadır (86)(87)(88)(89). Literatürde ilaç yüklemede kullanılan KNT ile ilgili heyecan verici gelişmeler olmasına rağmen, sitotoksik etkilerinin gösterildiği araştırmalar da vardır.…”

“…[23] Safety of these nanotubes has to be considered because of its needle-like fiber shape [8] and issues with respect to their toxicity still remains obscure and inconclusive, due to which probably no clinical trials have been tried by using carbon nanotubes. [32,34] …”
