Parasites of domestic and wild canids in the region of Serra do Cipó National Park, Brazil

Abstract: Over recent decades, diseases have been shown to be important causes of extinctions among wild species. Greater emphasis has been given to diseases transmitted by domestic animals, which have been increasing in numbers in natural areas, along with human populations. This study had the aim of investigating the presence of intestinal helminths in wild canids (maned wolf, Chrysocyon brachyurus, and crab-eating fox, Cerdocyon thous) in the Serra do Cipó National Park (43-44° W and 19-20° S) and endo and ectoparasi… Show more

“…However, we could not assert whether the maned wolves of the study area are natural hosts of this parasite or whether the infection is coming from sympatric domestic dogs and cats (exotics). The second alternative seems to be more likely as already suggested by Santos et al (2012). Dogs, domestic stray or errant, were commonly seen on a daily basis in the study area, where there is no efficient surveillance.…”

“…However, it is not easy to know whether parasitic infections represent a great harm to this species in Brazil, since few studies involving gastrointestinal parasites of C. brachyurus have been performed in nature (Dietz, 1984;Mattos et al, 2005;Braga et al, 2010;Curi et al, 2010Curi et al, , 2012Santos et al, 2012). It is also worth noting that these studies were performed in officially protected areas of the Brazilian savanna (Cerrado), the typical habitat of this species.…”

“…For instance, maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus), crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous), and sympatric domestic dogs were found to be infected with Ancylostoma, Trichuris and Toxocara in southeast Brazil (Curi et al, 2010(Curi et al, , 2012Santos et al, 2012). Toxocara sp.…”

“…In the samples of a Cerdocyon thous (crab-eating fox) and Chrysocyon brachyurus (maned wolf ) were identified Cestoda eggs and Eimeria oocysts. In a study carried in wild canids of Serra do Cipó National Park, Brazil, revealed the presence of Ancylostomiae, Trichuridae eggs among others parasites in feces of Cerdocyon thous and Chrysocyon brachyuru, however, only one sample (20%) of Cerdocyon thous was found Cestoda eggs (SANTOS et al, 2012).…”
