Validity of internal structure of the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory in a Brazilian sample

Abstract: This study investigated internal structure validity of the CSAI-2. The sample comprised 172 in Brazilian athletes, both sexes and ages ranging from 14 to 58 years. The athletes attended to the following sports: basketball, soccer, handball, volleyball and jiu-jitsu. The CSAI-2 was collectively applied before training. Initially a confirmatory factor analysis was done, but the data did not fit the model. Then, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted and, although the parallel analysis pointed out the adequ… Show more

“…Participants were asked to rate the intensity of each symptom on a scale from one (not at all) to four (very much so). Despite the fact that some CSAI-2 data analysis for Brazilian participants showed that the three-factor model was apparently inadequate, with marginal fit coefficients, the internal psychometric criteria here accomplished the requirements for all three factors: cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, and self-confidence [ 28 ]. CSAI-2 has been concurrently used with the evaluation of other physiological parameters (e.g., heart rate or cortisol) for a better characterization of psychophysiological responses to competitions in tennis and in other sports [ 7 , 29 ].…”

“…First, competitive anxiety, if present, has to be diagnosed. Thus far, subjective questionnaires appear to be suitable tools, and the 27-items CSAI-2 is one of the most used worldwide [51]. It is also considered as an efficient instrument before or after injury, especially in its reduced version (i.e.…”
