Metabolic disorders prevalence in sudden deafness

Abstract: OBJECTIVES:The aim of the present study was to establish the frequency of metabolic disorders among patients with sudden deafness and to compare this frequency with data from population surveys.INTRODUCTION:No consensus has been reached regarding the prevalence of metabolic disorders among sudden deafness patients or their influence as associated risk factors.METHODS:This cross‐sectional study enrolled all sudden deafness patients treated in the Otolaryngology Department of the University of São Paulo between … Show more

“…In a case-controlled study of 141 Italian patients, Aimoni et al (19) noted that the prevalence of diabetes was higher in the SSHL group (15.6%) compared with controls (8.5%, p = 0.03). Oiticica and Bittar (23) reported that hyperglycemia was noted in 23 (18.5%) Brazilian patients with SSHL ( p G 0.0001), a proportion that was higher than the national diabetic prevalence (7.6%). Lin et al (26) found that the prevalence of DM was higher in an SSHL group than in the controls (10.1 versus 4.3; p G 0.001).…”

“…cholesterol levels and hypertension, are more contributory as risk factors in its development. Moreover, Oiticica J and Bittar RSM [8] in studying the prevalence of metabolic disorders among patients with SSHL in Brazil noted that the mean age of their patients was 46.5 years and that 43.9 % were males were and 56.1 % were females.…”

“…Oiticica J, Bittar RSM [8] concluded that hyperglycemia and thyroid disorders are much more frequent in patients with sudden deafness than in the general population of Brazil and should be considered as important associated risk factors for sudden deafness. Furthermore, there was an increase on the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia in the sensorineural hearing loss SHL patient sample compared to the historical reference value for the Brazilian population, whereas, no difference was observed regarding LDL cholesterol fraction or triglyceride.…”
