Perception of difficulties with vision-related activities of daily living among patients undergoing unilateral posterior capsulotomy

Abstract: OBJECTIVESTo assess the influence of Nd:YAG (neodymium: yttrium-aluminum- garnet) laser unilateral posterior capsulotomy on visual acuity and patients’ perception of difficulties with vision-related activities of daily life.METHODSWe conducted an interventional survey that included 48 patients between 40 and 80 years of age with uni- or bilateral pseudophakia, posterior capsule opacification, and visual acuity ≤0.30 (logMAR) in one eye who were seen at a Brazilian university hospital. All patients underwent po… Show more

“…In the acute state, the affected eye showed correlation with near vision and distance vision questions which signifies some activities like searching for things in a crowded shelf and going out to see events (Near and distance vision based tasks) are affected if the affected eye vision is reduced drastically. If the vision is reduced marginally then the fellow eye is enough to manage daily activities [18].…”

“…It is presented in the form of a thermometer with 100 intervals, in which 100 represents the best imaginable state and 0 the worst imaginable state. This information can be used as a quantitative measure of There are studies to determine the impact of PCO and capsulotomy in visual function in reference to VA, contrast sensitivity, or glare disability (2,8,12), while the effect of PCO and capsulotomy on QOL has received less evaluative attention (13,14). Several vision-specific instruments have been used to evaluate functional impairment related to vision.…”

“…YAG PC treatment, preferred for PCO, is a non-invasive method; it does not require patient hospitalization and can be administered quickly (7). In addition, this treatment method creates a central opening in the thickened posterior capsule, obtaining effective results immediately (8). However, complications such as maculopathy and increased IOP may occur after YAG PC (9)(10)(11).…”
