Global Body Posture Evaluation in Patients with Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

Abstract: AIM: To identify the relationship between anterior disc displacement and global posture (plantar arches, lower limbs, shoulder and pelvic girdle, vertebral spine, head and mandibles). Common signs and symptoms of anterior disc displacement were also identified. INTRODUCTION: Global posture deviations cause body adaptation and realignment, which may interfere with the organization and function of the temporomandibular joint. METHODS : Global posture evaluation… Show more

“…For example, forward head posture with mandibular retrognathism may lead to posterior rotation and condyle fixation, further accentuating the TMJ's deterioration (ORTEGA, GUIMARÃES, CIAMPONI et al, 2008). Saito, Akashi and Sacco (2009) consider that postural changes may interfere not only with displacement of the articular disk, but also with painful symptomatology. However, these analyses are based on evidence and assessments of healthy individuals (KIRVESKARI, ALANEN, KARSKELA et al, 1988;MARIA, 2002;ROBINSON, 1966).…”

“…Vertical head angle change with regard to the acromion may be explained by the anterior position of the head which will lead to jaw positioning and functioning disorders, leading to increasing tension in masticatory muscles and, as a consequence, to TMD 16 . A study 17 has investigated the relationship between global posture and TMD. It has evaluated 26 patients divided in patients with anterior disk displacement and patients without TMD.…”

“…Nevertheless, in some cases, the presence of TMD is asymptomatic [3] [7] [8]. Saito et al, [9] have reported a close relationship between body posture and TMD, however it is not possible to determine whether postural deviations are the cause or the result of this TMD. In addition, it is considered that the postural evaluation could be an important component in the overall approach to providing accurate prevention and treatment in the management of patients with TMD.…”
