Effect of additives on the compressive strength and setting time of a Portland cement

Abstract: Improvements in strength and setting time of Portland cements (PC) are needed to enhance their performance as endodontic and load bearing materials. This study sought to enhance the compressive strength and setting time of a PC by adding one of the following additives: 20% and 30% poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA), 20% and 30% irregular and spherical amalgam alloys, and 10% CaCl 2 . The control consisted of unreinforced PC specimens. Setting time was determined using a Gillmore apparatus according to standardized… Show more

“…The greater compressive strength of MTA is considered an important feature when this cement is used as pulp capping or as a coronal restorative material when it is submitted to occlusal loads (Machado et al . ). However, when MTA is used as a root‐end filling material, where minimal forces are applied, its reduced compressive strength will not be a major drawback (Prasad et al .…”

“…The good compressive strength of cements is an essential factor when it comes to coronal treatments, for example, pulp capping. However, when applied as an apical plug where there are minimal applied forces, the cement's compressive strength will be of lower importance [20,25] than in coronal treatments. In addition to these properties, high pH values produced by these materials determines their antibacterial activity and their mineralization ability for calcium phosphates [26,27].…”

“…All of the samples at 168 h showed higher compressive strength values than at 24 h. SN incorporation did not interfere the hydration phase of PC, which provides more hardness to the cement material after final setting. It was anticipated that SN within PC matrix could reinforce the material similar to fillers in resin composites 29. Wang et al30 reported PC added by carbon fiber was improved in the compressive strength because carbon fibers blocked the initiation and propagation of microcracks.…”

“…Wang et al30 reported PC added by carbon fiber was improved in the compressive strength because carbon fibers blocked the initiation and propagation of microcracks. Machado et al29 reported that PC infiltrated by amalgam particles enhances the compressive strength as well as setting time. Guerreiro-Tanomaru et al21 adversely reported that the combination of PC with nanozinc oxide significantly decreased the compressive strength due to flaws or porosity in its microstructure.…”
