Maximal bite force in young adults with temporomandibular disorders and bruxism

Abstract: Parafunctional habits, such as bruxism, are contributory factors for temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the maximal bite force (MBF) in the presence of TMD and bruxism (TMDB) in young adults. Twelve women (mean age 21.5 years) and 7 men (mean age 22.4 years), composed the TMDB group. Ten healthy women and 9 men (mean age 21.4 and 22.4 years, respectively) formed the control group. TMD symptoms were evaluated by a structured questionnaire and clinical signs/symptoms were ev… Show more

“…Several previous studies have reported bite force as a clinical indicator of masticatory performance. This parameter is correlated with craniofacial morphology (Tsunori et al), gender (Tate et al, 1994) age (Klitgaard et al, 1990) temporomandibular disorders (TMD) (Pizolato & Gaviao, 2007), and also with status, number and tooth mobility (Miyaura et al, 1999).…”

“…Some authors reported correlation between TMD and MBF, when analyzed in individuals with signs and symptoms of this dysfunction and with absence of occlusal problems (23,24) . Conversely, other authors did not observe significant difference between the group with TMD and the group without dysfunction, in relation to MBF.…”

“…Bruksizm, parafonksiyonel olarak tanımlanmaktadır; çünkü fonksiyonel bir amacı yoktur. 8,9 Bruksizm, TMD için başlatıcı ve devam ettirici bir faktör olarak öne sürülmüştür. Önceki çalışmalar, hastaların %87,5'inde miyofasiyal ağrı (MFP) ve disk deplasmanının kombine olarak görüldüğünü ve bu hastaların %68,9'unun dişlerini sıktığını rapor etmiştir.…”
