Tabebuia rosea germination capacity and rate have been examined under light and dark conditions. However, seeds responses to light quality, in particular to short and mid-wavelengths, are not well known. We hypothesized that short wavelengths would have a positive effect on T. rosea germination. The effects of short, mid and long-wavelengths on germination capacity, rate (germination rate index, germination rate R50, a devised index of germination rate R50´ and peak value), mean daily germination and germination value were evaluated. Light quality had little effect on germination capacity; it was reduced only in darkness. Seeds under short and midwavelengths germinated faster (germination rate) than under any other light treatments. We concluded that although T. rosea seeds respond to all light quality treatments, the short and mid-wavelengths are the cue for increasing germination speed. For synchronizing germination, short and mid-wavelengths transmitted by red cellophane paper can be used as a pre-germinative treatment for restoration and silvicultural purposes.

-(Seeds germination of Maclura tinctoria (Moraceae) under different thermal regimes influenced by light). This study aimed to characterize germination of Maclura tinctoria seeds under different thermal regimes and alterations due presence or absence of light. Seeds were collected in Rio Claro, Ajapi, Itirapina, and Serra Negra, São Paulo State, Brazil. The results demonstrated that, in presence of light, seeds germinate in a wide temperature range (15 to 35 °C) and better perform between 20 and 30 °C. The ideal temperature for seed germination was 30 °C. In the absence of light, germination percentage decreased as the temperature diminished and germination temperature range was narrowed, changing the ideal temperature for germination, showing that the seeds of Maclura tinctoria require presence of light to express their maximum germination rate. Key words: forest seeds, storage, taiúva RESUMO -(Germinação de sementes de Maclura tinctoria (Moraceae) sob diferentes regimes térmicos influenciados pela luz). Este estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar a germinação de sementes de Maclura tinctoria sob diferentes regimes térmicos e alterações decorrentes da presença e ausência de luz. As sementes foram obtidas em Rio Claro, Ajapi, Itirapina e Serra Negra, SP. Os resultados demonstraram que na presença de luz as sementes germinam em ampla faixa térmica (15 a 35 °C) e apresentam melhor desempenho entre 20 e 30 °C, sendo 30 °C a temperatura ideal para a germinação. Na ausência de luz a germinação decresceu à medida que a temperatura diminuiu e a faixa térmica germinativa se estreitou, alterando também a temperatura ideal para a germinação, mostrando que as sementes de Maclura tinctoria necessitam de luz para expressar a taxa máxima de germinação.

The maricá (Mimosa bimucronata (DC) O. Kuntze) is a forest species, belonging to the family Fabaceae, considered endemic to the Atlantic Forest biome. The present work aimed to study the germinative behavior of M. bimucronata seeds under different temperatures and light qualities, as well as to evaluate the effect of the amount of water (humidity) in the substrate and the osmoconditioning during germination. Thus, the experiment was performed using a completely randomized design. The treatments were distributed in a 4 × 4 factorial scheme (temperatures and light qualities), with 4 replicates of 25 seeds each. The means were compared by Tukey's test at 5% probability. The volume of water and osmoconditioning of substrate was evaluated and data were subjected to regression analysis. The following variables were analyzed: first count of germinated seeds, germination, germination speed index, and electrical conductivity. The results revealed that seeds are neutral photoblasts, needing a constant temperature of 30 °C along with a white light for appropriate germination and vigor. Seeding on two sheets of paper towel moistened with water volume (mL) from 2.62 to 2.70 times was more suitable for conducting the germination test. The osmotic conditioning was inefficient in maintaining germination of these seeds.
