Tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica

Abstract: Tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica is a rare benign disease, of unknown cause, characterized by numerous sessile, cartilaginous, or bony submucosal nodules distributed throughout the anterolateral walls, projecting into the laryngotracheobronchial lumen. In general, tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica is diagnosed incidentally during bronchoscopy or autopsy and is not associated with a specific disease. We report the case of a male patient who was diagnosed with tracheobronchopathia osteochondropl… Show more

“…In any case, some authors still consider biopsies to be necessary in order to confirm the diagnosis and assess for associated conditions. 26,30 Histopathologic findings were epithelial squamous metaplasia along with submucosal nodules in cartilaginous areas; some with ossification, calcification, or hematopoietic bone marrow in them, 10 as can be seen in Figure 6. Treatment for TO is unspecific and symptomatic.…”

“…Wilks investigated microscopically by post-mortem a 38-year-old male who died of pulmonary tuberculosis in 1857 [1]. Von Schroetter proved the diagnosis by using a laryngeal mirror in vivo for the first time in an alive patient in 1896 [1,2].…”

“…In practice, a careful radiological examination is essential for diagnostic purposes, and bronchoscopy helps to eliminate differential diagnoses. There is no consensus on standard treatment as a consequence of few patients being reported in the literature [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Here, we present a case of TO who was involved with submucosal nodules only in the tracheal lumen and no more progress in the two-year follow-up.…”
