Jenynsia species are found from Atlantic coastal basins at sea level, between the Negro River, Argentina and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to rivers bordering the Andes at up to 2300 m a.s.l., between central Argentina and southern Bolivia (Aguilera et al, ).
