Los bagres del género Rhamdella Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1888 están incluidos en la familia Heptapteridae y constituyen un grupo monofilético, soportado por tres sinapomorfías: (i) apertura en el frontal para la salida de la rama S6 del canal latero sensorial supraorbital mucho más largo que las aperturas de las otras ramas sensoriales supraorbitales; (ii) foramen ópticos amplios, distintivamente mayores que el foramen del nervio trigeminofacial; y (iii) una banda oscura y delgada a lo largo de los flancos del cuerpo (Bockmann & Miquelarena, 2008). Además, estos peces presentan: nueve costillas pleurales; 43-47 vértebras; las aletas pectorales con fuertes espinas; aleta caudal emarginada; fontanela craneal extendida por el supraoccipital y un proceso supraoccipital que no contacta con la placa nucal
