Changes in ichthyofauna composition along a gradient from clearwaters to blackwaters in coastal streams of Atlantic forest (southeastern Brazil) in relation to environmental variables

Abstract: The lack of knowledge of the freshwater ichthyofauna of coastal streams in the State of São Paulo (Brazil) is a cause of concern, as these streams are inserted in the Atlantic forest, a hotspot highly threatened. The aim of the present study is to investigate the freshwater ichthyofauna composition of clear and blackwater streams in a preservation area of Brazilian Atlantic forest. Fish samples were taken using electrofishing. A total of 20 species were registered, with Astyanax ribeirae, Hollandichthys multif… Show more

“…Furthermore, the studied area has a great regional diversity of fishes, since the high diversity of aquatic environments (e.g. mountain streams with clear waters, lowland streams with black waters, and estuarine rivers with brackish waters), allows a greater diversity of species (Gonçalves & Braga 2012, Ferreira et al 2014). …”

“…These streams are represented by small and medium sized water bodies that run along upper cascaded channels, passing through intermediate reaches, which usually include combinations of riffles, pool and runs to slow lowlands moving channels (Rincón 1999, Oyakawa et al 2006, Rezende et al 2010. Coastal Atlantic streams support a high diversity of small-sized fish species with limited geographical distributions and high endemism (Esteves and Lobón-Cerviá 2001, Barreto and Aranha 2005, Gonçalves and Braga 2012.…”

“…Furthermore, most studies on fish community structure along coastal streams (Mazzoni and Lobón-Cerviá 2000, Ferreira and Petrere Jr 2009, Gonçalves and Braga 2012 have not considered the local fish-habitat associations and their influences on fish patterns in river segments. In this sense, knowledge about the fish ecology of coastal streams is still insufficient to infer accurate structuring patterns and processes, particularly at multiple scales, since fish composition and diversity are ultimately determined at both fine and coarse spatial scales (Cheek et al 2016).…”
