Assessment of canal walls after biomechanical preparation of root canals instrumented with protaper universalTM rotary system

Abstract: Objective:The aim of this study was to examine the instrumented walls of root canals prepared with the ProTaper Universal™ rotary system.Material and Methods:Twenty mesiobuccal canals of human first mandibular molars were divided into 2 groups of 10 specimens each and embedded in a muffle system. The root canals were transversely sectioned 3 mm short of the apex before preparation and remounted in their molds. All root canals were prepared with ProTaper Universal™ rotary system or with Nitiflex™ files. The pre… Show more

“…A new design feature of ProTaper Universal™ system comprises the more rounded tips of the finishing files with the aim to increase the working safety as well as to improve shaping ability. Furthermore, the cross‐section design has been modified to increase its inherent flexibility (11), cutting and efficiency with low proportion of apical deviation as demonstrated in the present investigation and in previous studies (6,10). These findings are in contrast to a previous study (9) in which the ProTaper Universal™ showed a greater tendency to produce apical transportation.…”

“…The ProTaper Universal™ rotary system represents an advancement of the ProTaper™ rotary system (6,10,11), which has been previously investigated in several studies (5,12–15). The basic sequence of the ProTaper Universal™ exhibits an advanced flute design that combines multiple tapers within the shaft, a convex triangular cross‐sectional design, blades close to the non‐cutting pilot tip as well as an increasing chip space (space for the accumulation of debris) from tip to shaft.…”

“…The apical region of infected canals, however, contains numerous microorganisms that mechanical instrumentation with a Fl file cannot fully eliminate 1,3 . The apical enlargement to sizes larger than #25 permits more efficient irrigation 4 , which is essential to reducing microbial contamination during endodontic therapy.…”

“…The main advantages of this widely-used method are the possibility to compare the root canal structure before and after instrumentation, and the fact that the analyzes are conducted in the real image of the root canal. 10,11,20,21,24 However, disadvantages have also been described, e.g., assessment restricted to limited portions of the root canal, insofar as this is a two-dimensional technique, and material may be lost from serial tooth sectioning. Moreover, it is an invasive method, with irreversible changes to specimens.…”
