Bilateral hydronephrosis caused by vaginal prolapse

Abstract: Introduction: Even though it is uncommon, uterine prolapse can cause compression of ureters and bilateral hydronephrosis, predisposing to arterial hypertension and renal failure. Hydronephrosis consequent to cystocele and to vaginal prolapse is even rarer.Case Report: This paper reports on a 59 year-old patient, Caucasian, obese and hysterectomized who presented complete vaginal prolapse with bilateral hydronephrosis and slight alteration in serum urea and creatinine. “…In the literature, there are several reported cases such as incidental diagnosis of hydroureteronephrosis due to uterine prolapse, bilateral hydronephrosis caused by vaginal vault prolapse or end-stage renal failure at neglected prolapse cases [8,9]. To the best of our knowledge, our report is the second acute renal failure case caused by uterine prolapse in the literature [10].…”

“…The analysis of full blood tests, serum creatinine and biochemical blood tests should be considered to monitor the clinical evolution of the patient. Nevertheless, a new pessary placement should be considered when critical clinical conditions are resolved (22-24). In this case the appropriate type and size of pessary should be inserted, and the correct positioning should be checked (10).…”

“…According to the literature, hydronephrosis may be due to profound static disorders. [ 16 19 ] In 5 papers (6 cases) of vaginal cancer and prolapse, hydronephrosis was also reported. [ 1 , 3 – 5 , 15 ] In our case, bladder involvement was diagnosed on the basis of the diagnostic biopsies collected in the cystoscopy.…”
