Patient and partner outcome of inflatable and semi-rigid penile prosthesis in a single institution

Abstract: Introduction:Penile prostheses are subject to a continuous development and have gained better mechanical reliability and safety during the last decades. In this study, we aimed to investigate the outcomes and satisfaction rates of inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) and semirigid penile prosthesis (SPP) implantation.Materials and Methods:From August 2001 to June 2012, 257 men with erectile dysfunction (ED) underwent penile prosthesis implantation (PPI) at our institution. Of the 257 patients, 118 underwent impl… Show more

“…Predictors of satisfaction after PPI have been previously investigated. Hydraulic penile prostheses have been associated with higher satisfaction rates as compared with the malleable, non-inflatable models [5,7,24]. Patients receiving a malleable device had a mean EDITS score of 57, compared with 78 for those implanted with an inflatable prosthesis (P < 0.05) [7].…”

“…However, in addition to the increased complexity of placement of IPP, they have higher patient satisfaction rates than malleable prostheses. This can be attributed to the fact that malleable prostheses are not as cosmetically appealing (difficulties with concealment and partner sensation) as compared to their inflatable counterparts [ 37 38 ]. IPP offer patients the ability to deflate to a flaccid state and inflate to an erect state when desired.…”

“…Mogelijk komt het omdat bij mannen na een RP hun erecties vrij abrupt verslechteren, en er verlies van ejaculatie optreedt, en ze daarmee een verminderde orgasmebeleving hebben [10]. Ten opzichte van de hydraulische prothese scoort de semirigide prothese minder goed wat betreft tevredenheid [12]. Opvallend is dat een andere studie concludeert dat 74 % van de mannen geen probleem heeft met het stijf blijven van de penis [13].…”
