Review of the geographical distribution of the white-spotted frog Chiasmocleis albopunctata (Boettger, 1885) (Anura, Microhylidae)

Abstract: This paper presents a review of the geographical distribution of Chiasmocleis albopunctata (Boettger, 1885), based on data from literature, scientific collections, and field notes. Our reviewing significantly enlarges the distribution of the species within the Brazilian territory, with new records for the states of Bahia, Maranhão, and Tocantins. Among all species of the genus, C. albopunctata can be considered the one with the widest latitudinal and altitudinal ranges, as well as greater environmental plastic… Show more

“…We have no additional information on the distribution of this species and refer to Forlani et al (2011) for data on this matter. The species is common in the Rio Tocantins basin with several records in the state of Tocantins, Brazil (Forlani et al, 2011). (figs.…”

“…The species adapts easily to anthropogenic disturbances and is usually associated with temporary water bodies and wetlands in forests, pastures, and fields. The species has been located in different regions of the state of São Paulo, Bahia, Maranhão, and Tocantins [65] and according to reference [66], can be considered the species with the greatest altitudinal and latitudinal variation, showing the greatest environmental plasticity. It is distributed throughout the Federal District and the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo, in open areas in the Chaco and Cerrado, living between 100 and 1,500 m of altitude [67].…”

“…Nonetheless, the limits used herein are fairly broad and allow for the inclusion of all species from the Amazonian forest and Guiana Shield, but also permits inclusion of Chiasmocleis albopunctata (Boettger, 1885), the type species of the genus, although technically not an ''Amazonian'' species. Chiasmocleis albopunctata is present in open habitats peripheral to the Amazonian rainforest, but widely distributed in the Rio Tocantins (5 Tocantins River) basin (Forlani et al, 2011).…”

“…AND SYNCOPE DIVERSITY OF CHIASMOCLEIS IN THE AMAZON AND GUIANA SHIELD: The type species of the genus is C. albopunctata (Boettger, 1885), originally described from Paraguay, but with several records in Brazil (see review in Forlani et al, 2011). The genus was proposed by Méhelÿ (1904) to accommodate the species Engystoma albopunctatum, based on putative morphological differences of the species and the remaining Engystoma.…”
