The increase in abundance of small-sized fishes is common after a reservoir is formed. There is an increase in the consumption of fish, from typically piscivorous fish to opportunistic species that take advantage of abundant resources. This study aims to evaluate the effects of diet changes induced by damming on the feeding activity and condition factor of typically piscivorous (Hoplias aff. malabaricus and Oligosarcus longirostris) and opportunistic (Astyanax lacustris (ex Astyanax altiparanae) and Pimelodus britskii). Sampling was conducted before and after the impoundment in the Iguaçu River in the region of Salto Caxias, Paraná State, Brazil. Stomach contents were analysed by the volumetric method. Feeding activity and body condition were inferred by the mean stomach repletion index and the mean condition factor. Typically piscivorous species presented a general tendency of decreased feeding activity and increased condition factor, while opportunistic species, presented a decrease in condition and feeding activity in the most affected sites. The increase in the condition factor of piscivorous fish suggests that these species benefit by the increased abundance of small size prey fish. Some opportunist species that do not have adjustments for the piscivorous diet, regardless of the intensity of consumption and resource availability, can suffer negative reflex when adopting a piscivorous diet.O aumento na abundância de peixes de pequeno porte é comum logo após a formação de um reservatório, levando a um aumento no consumo de peixes, tanto por peixes piscívoros como oportunistas que se aproveitam do recurso abundante. Esse estudo visa avaliar os efeitos da mudança de dieta induzida pelo represamento na atividade alimentar e condição nutricional, tanto de espécies piscívoras (Hoplias aff. malabaricus e Oligosarcus longirostris) quanto de espécies oportunistas (Astyanax lacustris (ex Astyanax altiparanae) e Pimelodus britskii). Para tanto, foram realizadas amostragens nas fases pré e pós-represamento no rio Iguaçu na região de Salto Caxias, Paraná, Brasil. Os conteúdos estomacais foram avaliados pelo método volumétrico. A atividade alimentar foi determinada pelo índice de repleção estomacal e a condição nutricional através do fator de condição relativo. As espécies tipicamente piscívoras apresentaram, em geral, incremento no fator de condição e queda na atividade alimentar e a espécie mais oportunista apresentou queda no fator de condição e índice de repleção nas regiões mais afetadas pelo represamento. O aumento no fator de condição de espécies piscívoras sugere que estas se beneficiam pelo aumento de abundância das espécies de pequeno porte. Enquanto espécies que não possuem adaptações para uma dieta piscívora, independente da intensidade de consumo e disponibilidade desse recurso, podem sofrer reflexos negativos em sua condição nutricional, em detrimento da ausência de pré-adaptações à piscivoria.

ABSTRACT. Study of the natural diet of the fish fauna of a centenary reservoir, São Paulo, Brazil. This study aimed characterize and compare the fish feeding from 13 fish species in three areas (river influence zone, transition zone and lake area) of Itupararanga reservoir. We analyzed 436 stomach, were found 17 food resources, all of autochthonous origin. The predominant species diet were: fish, insect, plant material and debris in the river influence zone; fish, sediment and plant material in the transition zone and insects, fish and scales in the lacustrine zone. The diet was characterized by Feeding Index (IA). Species were categorized in guilds: piscivorous insectivores, detritivores and carcinofagous. The Cluster indicated separation of insectivorous guild in generalist species (insects) and specialized (Chironomidae) which increases to five guilds. In the riverine zone area were found four guilds; in the transition zone three guilds and lacustrine zone two guilds. There was still a dominance of piscivorous species may be related to the age of the reservoir. This study expanded knowledge about fish feeding habits in old reservoirs and their differences comparing existing zones. RESUMO.Este estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar e comparar a alimentação de 13 espécies de peixes em três zonas (zona de influência fluvial, zona de transição e zona lacustre) do reservatório de Itupararanga. Foram analisados 436 estômagos, sendo encontrados 17 recursos alimentares, todos de origem autóctone. As dietas predominantes das espécies foram: peixe, inseto, material vegetal e detritos na zona de influência fluvial, peixe, sedimento e material vegetal na zona de transição e inseto, escama e peixe na zona lacustre. Através do Índice Alimentar, as espécies foram categorizadas nas guildas: piscívora, insetívora, detritívora e carcinófaga. O Cluster indicou separação da guilda insetívora em espécies generalistas (insetos diversos) e especialista (Chironomidae) o que aumenta para cinco guildas. Na zona fluvial foram verificadas quatro guildas; na zona de transição três guildas e na zona lacustre duas guildas. Observou-se ainda uma dominância de espécies piscívoras que pode estar relacionada à idade do reservatório. Este estudo ampliou o conhecimento dos hábitos alimentares dos peixes em reservatórios antigos e suas diferenças, comparando as zonas existentes. This study examined the diet and trophic structure of the fish fauna, over temporal and spatial scales, as affected by the impoundment of the Iguaçu River in the region of Salto Caxias, Paraná State, Brazil. Sampling was conducted before (March 1997 - February 1998) and after the impoundment (March 1999 - February 2000), at four sampling sites. The stomach contents were analyzed by the volumetric method. The species could be organized in 10 trophic guilds: algivores, carcinophages, detritivores, herbivores, aquatic insectivores, terrestrial insectivores, invertivores, omnivores, piscivores, and planktivores; the first and last guilds were represented only in the post-impoundment period. Similarity patterns and feeding changes were summarized by a non-metric Multi-dimensional Scaling (nMDS) analysis and statistically tested by a Permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA). Most species showed feeding changes, except for the piscivores and detritivores. These changes were related to the temporal factor (impoundment phases), such as reduced intake of benthic organisms and allochthonous food, which were usually replaced by resources from the reservoir itself (algae, microcrustaceans, and fish), simplifying the food spectrum of the fish fauna. A different indicator of food resources (IndVal) corroborated these changes in the feeding of the species. The proportions of the trophic guilds evaluated based on the catch per unit of effort (CPUE) and tested by ANOSIM were significantly different before and after the impoundment. Herbivores and piscivores were the guilds that contributed (SIMPER) to these differences, especially the high increase in biomass of the piscivore guild after the impoundment. Variations in the abundance of trophic guilds were more directly related to changes in the feeding habits of the fish fauna than to increases in the number and biomass of the species that constitute these guilds.
