Abstract: Abstract:The diet of the main fish species was evaluated from three stretches located in the Capivara reservoir, Paranapanema River and from one stretch on Tibagi River, the latter under the reservoir influence. The diet of these species, by the percentage composition, with the food items grouped was distinct: detritus and aquatic insects in three stretches (Cinzas, Cruzália and Porecatu); crustaceans and aquatic insects in Tibagi stretch. The fish species were grouped in six trophic groups, according to the m… Show more

“…In response to the increase in prey availability an increase in the piscivorous abundance was observed. Similar patterns have been reported for other reservoirs (Agostinho et al, 1999;Luz-Agostinho et al, 2006;Bennemann et al, 2011). This was also observed in the present study as the sites that presented the higher increases in prey abundance (DO and RE) also presented the higher increases in piscivorous abundance, as observed for H. aff.…”

“…Dominant species in a new reservoir are small-sized, with feeding plasticity, low longevity and high reproductive performance (opportunist strategy, sensu Winemiller, 1989), denoting advantages in the colonisation process (Agostinho et al, 1999). This small sized species become an abundant resource and explains the success of piscivores after impoundments (Luz- Agostinho et al, 2006;Bennemann et al, 2011).…”

“…One of the factors that limit the establishment and initial accommodation of the fish fauna in the new environment is the food supply (Mérona & Vigouroux, 2012). The rapid changes from the flooding and new flow conditions change the diet and the trophic structure of the fish fauna, which may lead to the proliferation of some species and the disappearance of others (Piana et al, 2005;Agostinho et al, 2010;Bennemann et al, 2011).…”
