The increase in abundance of small-sized fishes is common after a reservoir is formed. There is an increase in the consumption of fish, from typically piscivorous fish to opportunistic species that take advantage of abundant resources. This study aims to evaluate the effects of diet changes induced by damming on the feeding activity and condition factor of typically piscivorous (Hoplias aff. malabaricus and Oligosarcus longirostris) and opportunistic (Astyanax lacustris (ex Astyanax altiparanae) and Pimelodus britskii). Sampling was conducted before and after the impoundment in the Iguaçu River in the region of Salto Caxias, Paraná State, Brazil. Stomach contents were analysed by the volumetric method. Feeding activity and body condition were inferred by the mean stomach repletion index and the mean condition factor. Typically piscivorous species presented a general tendency of decreased feeding activity and increased condition factor, while opportunistic species, presented a decrease in condition and feeding activity in the most affected sites. The increase in the condition factor of piscivorous fish suggests that these species benefit by the increased abundance of small size prey fish. Some opportunist species that do not have adjustments for the piscivorous diet, regardless of the intensity of consumption and resource availability, can suffer negative reflex when adopting a piscivorous diet.O aumento na abundância de peixes de pequeno porte é comum logo após a formação de um reservatório, levando a um aumento no consumo de peixes, tanto por peixes piscívoros como oportunistas que se aproveitam do recurso abundante.
Fish rearing in cages installed in reservoirs has developed rapidly in Brazil over the last decade. However, this type of aquaculture induces some changes in the environment because of the high quantity of nutrients released into the surroundings. This study evaluated trophic changes resulting from these nutrient inputs into the diet, feeding activity and nutritional condition of Auchenipterus osteomystax, an insectivore that alternatively feeds on zooplankton. Fish were sampled with gillnets in two tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) experimental caging aquaculture areas of the Rosana reservoir (Paranapanema River), at different distances from the cages. Samplings were carried out for 90 days (before the cages were installed and 30 and 60 days after installation). Diet analysis was based on 250 stomach contents evaluated with occurrence and volumetric methods, combined into a Feeding Index. The spatial and temporal variations in feeding activity were inferred by the stomach repletion index (stomach weight). The relative condition factor was used to evaluate the individual nutritional condition of the sampled fish. Insects and zooplankton accounted for more than 85% of the diet in any sample. Insects predominated before caging culture started and at the end of the sampling period, whereas zooplankton predominated 30 days after caging began. The repletion index increased at 30 days after caging in both areas when the condition factor was the lowest, with some recovery at the end of this period. The input of nutrients near caging areas caused a short elevation in zooplankton availability, which promoted changes in the diet of this opportunist species, increasing its feeding activity. However, these changes appeared to be unsustainable due to the poor nutritional condition of the individuals. Keywords: eutrophication, reservoir, aquaculture, feeding, condition factor. As variações espaciais e temporais na at...
The limiting similarity theory predicts that divergence in the functional traits of native and introduced species is an essential component in species establishment, as introduced species must occupy a niche that is unoccupied by resident species. On the other hand, the environmental filtering hypothesis predicts convergence between introduced and native species, as both possess traits that make them adapted to the local abiotic environment. Morphology, spatial co-occurrence, diet, feeding selectivity, and niche breadth and overlap of Erythrinidae were evaluated to detect possible mechanisms acting in the coexistence between non-native and native species. Native (Hoplias sp. B and Hoplias cf. malabaricus) and nonnative (Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus and Hoplias mbigua) species presented differences in morphological traits, spatial cooccurrence, diet, selectivity, and niche breadth and overlap. The mechanisms mediating species coexistence seem to vary according to species. The absence of spatial and feeding overlap suggests that non-native species H. unitaeniatus occupy a different niche than native species, supporting its successful establishment without eliminating the native species. However, low feeding overlap and similar morphologies between non-native and native species of Hoplias point to environmental filters; in this case, the non-native H. mbigua is able to establish due to similarities in functional traits. Keywords: Competition, Co-occurrence, Fish feeding, Morphology, Predation.
