The coexistence of endemic species of Astyanax (Teleostei: Characidae) is propitiated by ecomorphological and trophic variations. Fish were collected at three samplings sites in 1993 and 1994, during the first year after the filling phase of the reservoir. The diet was assessed using stomach content analysis and ecomorphology by ecomorphological indices. Diet and ecomorphology data were ordinated by multivariate techniques (DCA and PCA, respectively), aiming to characterize trophic guilds and identify ecomorphological patterns. A MRPP was performed to check differences between diet and morphology of species. Trophic and ecomorphological patterns were recorded among the Astyanax species, and significant differences were found for both aspects. In this way, our results corroborate the presupposed hypothesis. Therefore, the trophic and ecomorphological segregation between Astyanax species from Segredo Reservoir can contribute to reduce the competition, favoring thus their coexistence. Resumo: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os fatores que favorecem a coexistência de três espécies endêmicas de Astyanax (Astyanax bifasciatus, Astyanax minor e Astyanax gymnodontus) no reservatório de Segredo (rio Iguaçu, Paraná, Brasil), e testar a hipótese de que as três espécies partilham os recursos alimentares, sendo que as variações na dieta estão relacionadas às características morfológicas das espécies. Os peixes foram coletados em três estações de amostragem no primeiro ano após o fechamento da barragem, nos anos de 1993 e 1994. A dieta foi avaliada através da análise dos conteúdos estomacais, e a ecomorfologia através dos índices ecomorfológicos. Os dados de dieta e morfologia foram ordenados por meio de técnicas multivariadas (DCA e PCA, respectivamente), com a finalidade de caracterizar as guildas tróficas e identificar os padrões ecomorfológicos. Posteriormente, foi realizada uma MRPP para verificar a existência de diferenças quanto à alimentação e os padrões morfológicos entre as espécies. Padrões tróficos e ecomorfológicos foram registrados entre as espécies de Astyanax. Diferenças significativas foram encontradas para ambos os aspectos. Dessa forma, os resultados corroboraram a hipótese inicial, sendo a segregação trófica e ecomorfológica entre as espécies deAstyanax do reservatório de Segredo um fator que pode contribuir para diminuir a competição entre elas, favorecendo a sua coexistência no ambiente. In this study we conducted an ichthyofaunistic survey in the Pirapó River drainage, upper Paraná River basin, based on voucher specimens deposited in the Coleção Ictiológica do Nupélia/UEM. We reported a total of six orders, 23 families, and 76 species, in which four of them were classified as allochthonous and two as exotics. Twenty-eight percent of these species were recorded only for tributaries, whereas the commercially important migratory species, Dourado - Salminus brasiliensis (Cuvier, 1816), was recorded in the main channel, indicating that the Pirapó River, still free from impoundments, may be one of the last rivers in the upper Paraná River basin that can be used to protect migratory fish species.

Morphological and genetic evidences suggest that Rhamdia branneri and Rhamdia voulezi, currently considered synonymous of Rhamdia quelen, are in fact two valid species. Furthermore, in the taxonomic revision of R. quelen, no exemplars from the Iguaçu River were examined, which makes the synonymy doubtful. Considering the two species as valid, it was hypothesized that R. branneri and R. voulezi have ecomorphological differences, with the objective to verify if they can be considered ecologically distinct. Ecomorphological characterization was conducted using ecomorphological indices. For statistical analysis, a Principal Component Analysis (PCA), a Multiresponse Permutation Procedure (MRPP), and a Discriminant Analysis (DA) were performed. The ordination provided by the PCA evidenced ecomorphological separation, with R. branneri having morphological aspects related to benthic fishes, and R. voulezi having morphological characteristics related to pelagic and lentic habitats. The DA results confirmed the morphological tendencies found in the PCA, and the MRPP showed significant statistical differences between the ecomorphology of Rhamdia species. In this way, the initial hypothesis can be corroborated. These results allied to information about diet, genetics, and reproduction can be helpful for the elucidation of the taxonomic status of R. branneri and R. voulezi. Resumo: Evidências morfológicas e genéticas sugerem que Rhamdia branneri e Rhamdia voulezi, atualmente consideradas sinônimas de Rhamdia quelen, são, de fato, duas espécies válidas. Adicionalmente, na revisão taxonômica de R. quelen nenhum exemplar do rio Iguaçu foi examinado, o que torna a sinonímia duvidosa. Considerando as duas espécies como válidas, foi testada a hipótese de que R. branneri e R. voulezi possuem diferenças ecomorfológicas, com o objetivo de verificar se elas podem ser consideradas ecologicamente distintas. A caracterização ecomorfológica foi conduzida utilizando os índices ecomorfológicos. Para a análise estatística foram feitas Análise de Componentes Principais (ACP), Procedimento de Permutação Multiresposta (PPMR) e Análise Discriminante (AD). A ordenação proveniente da ACP evidenciou separação ecomorfológica, com R. branneri possuindo aspectos morfológicos relacionados a peixes bentônicos e R. voulezi possuindo características morfológicas relacionadas a habitats pelágicos e lênticos. Os resultados da AD confirmaram as tendências morfológicas encontradas na ACP, e o PPMR mostrou diferenças estatísticas significativas entre as espécies de Rhamdia. Dessa maneira, a hipótese inicial pôde ser corroborada. Esses resultados, aliados a informações sobre a dieta, genética e reprodução, podem ser úteis para a elucidação do status taxonômico de R. branneri e R. voulezi. The limiting similarity theory predicts that divergence in the functional traits of native and introduced species is an essential component in species establishment, as introduced species must occupy a niche that is unoccupied by resident species. On the other hand, the environmental filtering hypothesis predicts convergence between introduced and native species, as both possess traits that make them adapted to the local abiotic environment. Morphology, spatial co-occurrence, diet, feeding selectivity, and niche breadth and overlap of Erythrinidae were evaluated to detect possible mechanisms acting in the coexistence between non-native and native species. Native (Hoplias sp. B and Hoplias cf. malabaricus) and nonnative (Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus and Hoplias mbigua) species presented differences in morphological traits, spatial cooccurrence, diet, selectivity, and niche breadth and overlap. The mechanisms mediating species coexistence seem to vary according to species. The absence of spatial and feeding overlap suggests that non-native species H. unitaeniatus occupy a different niche than native species, supporting its successful establishment without eliminating the native species. However, low feeding overlap and similar morphologies between non-native and native species of Hoplias point to environmental filters; in this case, the non-native H. mbigua is able to establish due to similarities in functional traits.Keywords: Competition, Co-occurrence, Fish feeding, Morphology, Predation.Teorias sobre nicho ecológico afirmam que divergência em traços funcionais entre espécies nativas e introduzidas são essenciais ao estabelecimento da espécie introduzida, pois estas devem ocupar um nicho não utilizado pelas espécies residentes. Por outro lado, a teoria de filtros ambientais afirma a convergência entre espécies introduzidas e nativas, pois ambas possuem traços funcionais que fazem com que essas espécies estejam mais adaptadas as variáveis ambientais. Foram avaliadas a morfologia, ocorrência espacial, dieta, seletividade alimentar, sobreposição e largura de nicho em Erythrinidae para detectar possíveis mecanismos atuando na coexistência de espécies nativas e não nativas. Espécies nativas (Hoplias sp. B e Hoplias cf. malabaricus) e não nativas (Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus e Hoplias mbigua) apresentaram diferenças em todos os atributos testados. Os mecanismos mediando a coexistência de espécies nativas e não nativas parecem variar de acordo com a espécie considerada. A ausência de sobreposição espacial e na dieta sugere que a espécie não nativa H. unitaeniatus ocupa um nicho distinto que as espécies nativas, favorecendo seu estabelecimento sem eliminar as espécies nativas, apontando para segregação de nicho. ABSTRACT. Morphological variations, according to the principles of ecomorphology, can be related to different aspects of the organism way of life, such as occupation of habitats and feeding behavior. The present study sought to examine the intraspecific variation in two populations of Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859, that occur in two types of environments, a lotic (Maringá Stream) and a lentic (Jaboti Lake). Due to a marked sexual dimorphism, males and females were analyzed separately. Thus, the proposed hypotheses were that the populations that occur in distinct environments present morphological differences. The morphological variables were obtained using morphometric measurements and the ecomorphological indexes. The data were summarized in a Principal Component Analysis (PCA). A Multivariate Analysis of Variance (Manova) was made to verify significant differences in morphology between the populations. Males and females showed similar ecomorphological patterns according to the environment they occur. In general the population from Maringá Stream had fins with major areas, and the Jaboti Lake population eyes located more dorsally. Additionally, others morphological differences such as wider mouth of the males from Maringá Stream, wider heads on Jaboti Lake females and more protractible mouths on males from Jaboti Lake suggest a set of environmental variables that can possibly influence the ecomorphological patterns of the populations, as the water current, availability of food resources and predation. In summary, the initial hypotheses could be confirmed, evidencing the occurrence of distinct ecomorphotypes in the same species according to the environment type.KEYWORDS. Variações morfológicas, de acordo com os princípios da ecomorfologia, podem ser relacionadas a diferentes aspectos do modo de vida dos organismos, como a ocupação de hábitats e comportamento alimentar. O presente estudo buscou analisar essas variações em nível intraespecífico em duas populações de Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859, que ocorrem em dois tipos de ambientes, um lótico (ribeirão Maringá) e um lêntico (lago Jaboti). Por apresentar um acentuado dimorfismo sexual machos e fêmeas foram analisados separadamente. Assim, a hipótese proposta foi de que as populações, que ocorrem em ambientes distintos, possuem diferenças morfológicas. In this work we report on the presence of morphological deformities in Corydoras aff. longipinnis from two reservoirs in Paraná State, Brazil. The frequency of deformities in the fish populations was 11% in Iraí and 10.5% in Capivari reservoirs. Considering that the frequency may be associated with impacts caused by anthropic activities, this information can be used as a metric in management systems and environmental monitoring.

We investigated the fish fauna response to different environmental conditions of urban (three) and rural (seven) streams through biomass/abundance curves and W index of environmental stress. Negative values of W indicate some level of stress, while positive values suggest environments with lower stress. Dissolved oxygen, marginal erosion (both left and right margins), mesohabitat diversity, and percentage of canopy cover were measured to characterize the 10 streams analysed around Maringá city, Southern Brazil. Fish were sampled by electrofishing, then identified and weighed. Results showed negative values of W to the urban streams and positive to the rural. Urban streams showed a tendency to have assemblages of fish with lower biomass and greater abundance (r-strategists).
