Amphibians and reptiles from a highly diverse area of the Caatinga domain: composition and conservation implications

Abstract: Abstract:We surveyed the herpetofauna from the Complex of Planalto da Ibiapaba (CPI), CE, Brazil, during two years, using five sampling methods and information available in the literature. The amphibians are represented by 38 species distributed into nine families. The reptiles found summed 84 species, distributed into 25 families. Most amphibians collected exhibited wide occurrence along CPI, where we recorded 24 species (63.2%), which occurred at least in 60% of the sampled environments. Reptiles showed a di… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the inventory of anuran amphibians in ESEC-RC was conducted along a whole year. (Loebmann & May 2008, Loebmann & Haddad 2010, Magalhã es et al 2013. In a previous work conducted in Catimbau National Park (Campos & Santos 2011), 26 anuran species were recorded with a few differences in species composition.…”

“…Em geral, espécies de matas de encostas não apresentam grandes agregações para a reprodução, ao passo que espécies de áreas abertas se congregam em altas densidades durante a estação reprodutiva (Wells, 1977, Ribeiro-Júnior, 2009Loebmann e Haddad, 2010).…”

“…According to Brazilian Society of Herpetology a total of 946 described species has been recognized to the country so far (Segalla et al 2012). However, the vast degradation of natural habitats increases the extinction rates of populations at higher levels (Silvano & Segalla 2005) and several regions remain unknown regarding the diversity of amphibian species and their distribution, especially in northeastern Brazil (Loebmann & Haddad 2010). In this sense we provide the first assessment regarding amphibian diversity and biogeographic patterns in the state of Piauí, a region situated between the Cerrado and the Caatinga biomes in northeastern Brazil.…”
