We investigate the composition of anuran communities of land-bridge islands off the southeastern coast of Brazil. These islands provide natural long-term experiments on the effects of fragmentation in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (BAF). We hypothesize that Pleistocene sea-level changes, in combination with other abiotic variables such as area and habitat diversity, has affected anuran species richness and community composition on these islands. Data from the literature and collections databases were used to produce species lists for eight land-bridge islands and for the mainland adjacent to the islands. We assess the effects of area, number of breeding habitats and distance to the mainland upon anuran species richness on land-bridge islands. Additionally we use nestedness analysis to quantify the extent to which the species on smaller and less habitat-diverse islands correspond to subsets of those on larger and more diverse ones. We found that area has both direct and indirect effects on anuran species richness on land-bridge islands, irrespective of distance to the mainland. However, on islands with comparable sizes, differences in species richness can be attributed to the number and quality of breeding habitats. Anuran communities on these islands display a nested pattern, possibly caused by selective extinction related to habitat loss. Common lowland pond-breeders were conspicuous by their absence. In the BAF, the conservation of fragments with a high diversity of breeding habitats could compensate for the generally negative effect of small area upon species richness. We suggest that sea-level changes have an important role in shaping composition of anuran species on coastal communities.

Sphaenorhynchus planicola typically inhabit deep swamps and permanent ponds in open areas or forest borders (Lutz 1954;Cochran 1955;Izecksohn and Carvalho-e-Silva 2001b;Silva-Soares et al 2010) and are tolerant to disturbed environments (IUCN 2015). Changes in the characteristics of ponds in FNMX from the 1980s to 2012 may have made these ponds a good environment for this species, but this needs confirmation.…”

Abstract:The Floresta Nacional Mário Xavier (FNMX) is a reserve located in the Municipality of Seropédica, State of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. It is an area with intense anthropic activity and is one of the last remaining forests of the Baixada Fluminense. An inventory of the anurans of the FNMX was performed and the results compared with those of a previous species list for the area. Thirteen excursions were conducted, totaling more than 416 hours of sampling effort. Twenty-six species belonging to five families were found: Bufonidae (one species), Hylidae (15 species), Leptodactylidae (six species), Microhylidae (three species) and Phyllomedusidae (one species). Six species on the previous list were not found in this study. Sphaenorhynchus planicola is a new record for the area. Two species are endangered: Chiasmocleis lacrimae and Physalaemus soaresi, the latter being considered critically endangered by the List of Brazilian Fauna Threatened with Extinction.

RESUMO O entendimento dos padrões da riqueza de espécies ao longo de gradientes ambientais tem sido o foco de muitos estudos de ecologia e de biogeografia nas últimas décadas. Dentre estes, a maioria dos casos de distribuição da riqueza de espécies ao longo de gradientes altitudinais mostra uma tendência para um pico de maior riqueza de espécies em altitudes intermediárias ou para um declínio linear da riqueza com o aumento da elevação. Devido à grande diversidade de espécies e por ocuparem uma grande amplitude altitudinal, os anfíbios possuem elevado potencial como organismos modelo para este tipo de estudo. Assim, este trabalho teve o objetivo de verificar o estado atual do conhecimento sobre a biologia, a distribuição e a conservação de anfíbios ao longo de gradientes altitudinais, com base em pesquisas realizadas usando a base de dados do Web of Science, Scielo e Google Acadêmico, bem como nas referências bibliográficas dos artigos encontrados. As implicações de algumas variáveis ambientais (ex. disponibilidade de copos hídricos, temperatura, oxigênio) sobre a biologia dos anfíbios foram discutidas. Foram registrados 30 artigos sobre a distribuição de espécies de anfíbios anuros ao longo de gradientes altitudinais. A maioria dos estudos sobre o tema indica que ocorre diminuição no número de espécies nas altitudes mais elevadas, alguns mostrando a existência de pico de diversidade nas altitudes intermediárias. A maioria dos estudos que testaram o efeito Rapoport mostrou que os anuros tendem a não seguir este padrão. No Brasil, apenas dois estudos consideraram o efeito da altitude sobre a distribuição das espécies de anfíbios. A amplitude altitudinal nesses estudos é restrita, e isso, associado ao efeito de localidades distantes e distintos anos de amostragens, ainda limita a compreensão da distribuição das espécies de anuros ao longo dos gradientes altitudinais no Brasil. De fato, não existem estudos publicados com um desenho experimental delineado para avaliar este tipo de questão para os anuros no Brasil, apesar do grande potencial do país tanto em termos de diversidade de anuros como em termos de disponibilidade de localidades com amplitude altitudinal relativamente elevada.
