ABSTRACT. Liolaemus lutzae Mertens, 1938 is a critically endangered lizard endemic to the restinga habitat of the state of Rio de Janeiro. We surveyed 25 restinga habitats in order to locate remaining populations, evaluate the status of the species, and determine the nature of local habitat degradation. We found remnant populations of L. lutzae in 18 restinga habitats of six municipalities. The conservation status of each population varied between areas: the population of Grumari, in Rio de Janeiro municipality, is the most preserved and the population of Praia do Forte, in Cabo Frio, is the most disturbed. No L. lutzae were found in Niterói municipality. The most destructive type of habitat degradation identified was the removal of beach vegetation associated with the construction of coastal roads and/or sidewalks, destruction of the vegetation due to trampling, vehicle traffic and garbage dumping. Our data revealed that generally, beach habitats under a larger number of impact sources were those with smaller population sizes of L. lutzae. We consider that the most effective conservation measure for L. lutzae is the strict protection of its habitat, with restoration of the original beach vegetation. Finally, we recommend vegetation recovery to be followed by a program of reintroduction of the species in localities where it has been eradicated.

RESUMO O entendimento dos padrões da riqueza de espécies ao longo de gradientes ambientais tem sido o foco de muitos estudos de ecologia e de biogeografia nas últimas décadas. Dentre estes, a maioria dos casos de distribuição da riqueza de espécies ao longo de gradientes altitudinais mostra uma tendência para um pico de maior riqueza de espécies em altitudes intermediárias ou para um declínio linear da riqueza com o aumento da elevação. Devido à grande diversidade de espécies e por ocuparem uma grande amplitude altitudinal, os anfíbios possuem elevado potencial como organismos modelo para este tipo de estudo. Assim, este trabalho teve o objetivo de verificar o estado atual do conhecimento sobre a biologia, a distribuição e a conservação de anfíbios ao longo de gradientes altitudinais, com base em pesquisas realizadas usando a base de dados do Web of Science, Scielo e Google Acadêmico, bem como nas referências bibliográficas dos artigos encontrados. As implicações de algumas variáveis ambientais (ex. disponibilidade de copos hídricos, temperatura, oxigênio) sobre a biologia dos anfíbios foram discutidas. Foram registrados 30 artigos sobre a distribuição de espécies de anfíbios anuros ao longo de gradientes altitudinais. A maioria dos estudos sobre o tema indica que ocorre diminuição no número de espécies nas altitudes mais elevadas, alguns mostrando a existência de pico de diversidade nas altitudes intermediárias. A maioria dos estudos que testaram o efeito Rapoport mostrou que os anuros tendem a não seguir este padrão. No Brasil, apenas dois estudos consideraram o efeito da altitude sobre a distribuição das espécies de anfíbios. A amplitude altitudinal nesses estudos é restrita, e isso, associado ao efeito de localidades distantes e distintos anos de amostragens, ainda limita a compreensão da distribuição das espécies de anuros ao longo dos gradientes altitudinais no Brasil. De fato, não existem estudos publicados com um desenho experimental delineado para avaliar este tipo de questão para os anuros no Brasil, apesar do grande potencial do país tanto em termos de diversidade de anuros como em termos de disponibilidade de localidades com amplitude altitudinal relativamente elevada.

We present data on species composition, relative abundance and estimated densities for leaf-litter anuran amphibians from an Atlantic Forest area within the Parque Estadual do Desengano, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, based on results of a short-term survey carried out during the winter at altitudes of 1000-1500 m. Three sampling methods were used: plot sampling, visual encounter surveys (VES; performed during the day, at the twilight, and at night), and pitfall traps. We recorded 13 species, with the direct-developer Ischnocnema parva (Girard, 1853) being the most abundant. Most frogs (ca. 90% of all individuals) sampled by VES were captured during the crepuscular and nocturnal periods. The estimated density of the local leaf-litter frog assemblage based on plot sampling was 13.2 ind.100 m-2, which is one of the highest values currently reported for Atlantic Rainforest areas. This is the first study analyzing the anuran fauna of the Parque Estadual do Desengano and adds to the knowledge of the fauna of the northern region of the state of Rio de Janeiro, which is still poorly studied.
