Diet and feeding activity of Acestrorhynchus lacustris (Lütken, 1875) (Characiformes, Acestrorhynchidae) in the water reservoir at Ribeirão Claro, SP

Abstract: A. lacustris is a widely distributed species in the São Francisco and Paraná river basins, mainly in lentic waters. Specimens were captured monthly, over a whole year in a reservoir built by damming the Ribeirão Claro stream (SP). The stomach contents analyses showed a predominantly piscivorous diet. Feeding activity showed to be clearly less intense during winter, when all the sampling groups were compared. Despite the fact that the diet of A. lacustris presents a high diversity of prey-species, the prey size… Show more

“…The species of Acestrorhynchidae are of interest because they belong to a monophyletic taxon and presented a high degree of endemism to Amazon, Orinoco, São Francisco, Paraná, Paraguay basins and La Plata drainages (SILVA & GOITEIN, 2009;TOLEDO-PIZA, 2007;PRETTI et al, 2009;FROESE & PAULY, 2016). These species are found in a variety of habitats, but primarily live in lakes in areas near the shores of the Amazon River and Orinoco River systems, and the smallest species are especially found in small creeks (igarapés).…”

“…Studies on the diet of species of the genus Acestrorhynchus have revealed the piscivorous feeding habits of juvenile and adult individuals in other hydrological periods and in other water basins (Bozza and Hahn, 2010;Dourado et al, 2015;Krinski, 2010;Meurer and Zaniboni-Filho, 2012;Rocha et al, 2011;Silva and Goitein, 2009), with the majority of the prey belonging to the Characiformes order.…”
