Abstract:The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of food resources by juveniles and adults of Acestrorhynchus lacustris, Hemisorubim platyrhynchos, Hoplias aff. malabaricus, Plagioscion squamosissimus, Pseudoplatystoma corruscans e Salminus brasiliensis from the upper Paraná River floodplain, sampled quarterly between March 2007 and December 2008. The quantitative trophic composition was obtained by prey volume (% volume) and diet niche breadth of each piscivorous species, as well as trophic relationships among them through diet similarity and prey size. The diet of the species was composed of fish-preys (42 species), crustaceans and insects, with ontogenetic diet changes, except to P. corruscans. The niche breadth was high to H. aff. malabaricus adults and low to P. corruscans adults and P. squamosissimus juveniles. Diet similarity was high to Characidae species consumers and low to P. squamosissimus juveniles, which consumed mainly crustaceans. Positive correlation was found between prey and predator size, however, each piscivorous species consumed different prey sizes, showing no correlation among them. Results showed that the six species consumed fish since juveniles, however, with low diet similarity intra and inter specific to most of them, and the prey size consumed increased in relation to predator size and varied among species. Thus, the piscivorous species diet depends of prey species distribution and colonization, morphology and feeding behavior of the prey as well as the predator. Resumo: Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o uso dos recursos alimentares por indivíduos imaturos e adultos de Acestrorhynchus lacustris, Hemisorubim platyrhynchos, Hoplias aff. malabaricus, Plagioscion squamosissimus,Pseudoplatystoma corruscans e Salminus brasiliensis, da planície de inundação do alto Rio Paraná, coletados trimestralmente entre março de 2007 e dezembro de 2008. Foi avaliada a composição quantitativa da dieta através da obtenção do volume das presas (% volume) e amplitude de nicho trófico de cada uma das espécies, bem como as inter-relações tróficas entre elas, através da similaridade entre as dietas e tamanho das presas. A dieta das seis espécies foi composta por peixes-presa (42 espécies), crustáceos e insetos, sendo que todas elas, com exceção de P. corruscans, mostraram alterações ontogenéticas. A amplitude de nicho foi maior para H. aff. malabaricus adultos e menor para P. corruscans adultos e P. squamosissimus imaturos. A similaridade na dieta foi maior para aquelas espécies que consumiram Characidae e menor para P. squamosissimus imaturos, os quais consumiram preferencialmente crustáceos. Houve correlação positiva entre o tamanho da presa e do predador, porém cada espécie consumiu presas de tamanhos diferentes, mostrando que elas não são correlacionadas. This study investigated the parasite communities of wild Acestrorhynchus falcatus and Acestrorhynchus falcirostris populations living in sympatry in Brazilian Amazon. In these two hosts, a total of 12 parasite species e 1-9 parasite species were found per fish, and 10 of these species are metazoans. Eight species of parasites were common to both host species and four of them exhibited differences in abundance and/or prevalence. Parasite communities of the hosts were taxonomically similar (83%) and composed of both ectoparasites and endoparasites, and characterized by high prevalence and high abundance of endoparasites and an aggregated dispersion pattern. For A. falcirostris, the dominant parasite was Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, and for A. falcatus, it was Piscinoodinium pillulare. Shannon diversity and Berger-Parker dominance were similar for both hosts, while the parasites species richness and evenness showed differences influenced by the ectoparasites species. These two populations of hosts that inhabited the same geographical area had different sizes, but were exposed to the same infective stages, and acquired qualitatively and quantitatively similar endoparasites community, thus indicating that the amounts and types of prey congeneric that they were eating were similar. Therefore, the overlap in the same occurrence area play an important role in the parasite communities to these phylogenetically related hosts.

The aim objective of this study was to determine the trophic ecology of juvenile and adult Acestrorhynchus falcirostris during the rising and flood (high-water) period in six island lakes adjacent to the Solimões River. As such, we investigated: i) the trophic position, through the fractional trophic niche; ii) the niche breadth; iii) niche overlap and iv) the food strategy of the species. The specimens were collected during the years 2014 to 2017, using gillnets with mesh sizes ranging from 30 to 120mm between opposite knots. Through the analysis of stomach contents, the preference in the consumption of items of animal origin was observed. Juveniles consumed insects in greater proportions (IAi% = 50%), while adults consumed fish (IAi%=99,98%). Despite the large supply of food items available in the high-water period, juveniles were the only ones to consume items of allochthonous origin, such as insects. Juveniles presented a different dietary strategy and dietary composition to adults. Juveniles were omnivores with a generalist strategy, while adults were piscivores with a specialist strategy. Thus, the food composition, niche breadth, trophic position and feeding strategy of Acestrorhynchus falcirostris change due to the stage of development.
