Two new species of Leporinus Agassiz, 1829 from Araguaia-Tocantins system, Amazon basin, Brazil (Ostariophysi, Anostomidae)

Abstract: Two new species of genus Leporinus from the Araguaia-Tocantins system, Amazon, Brazil, are described. Leporinus unitaeniatus n. sp. is distinguished from the remaining species of this genus by the presence of a conspicuous longitudinal dark brown bar along the lateral line on the flanks, and Leporinus geminis n. sp. is distinguished by an inconspicuous dark bar combined with three large and vertically elongated brown blotches on the trunk; the first on the dorsal fin region, the second anterior to the adipose … Show more

“…Symphyseal teeth bearing three cusps, and between two and three cusps in the second and third positions. Myers (1950) used dental morphology to diagnose most genera of the Anostomidae, as it was widely used method then (Winterbottom 1980;Garavello and Santos 2009;Ramirez et al 2017). The genera Anostomus, Pseudanos, and Petulanos have compressed teeth (i.e., without mesial ridge) with three or four rounded cusps of similar size on the premaxilla and dentary (see Myers 1950;Winterbottom 1980).…”

“…How the Characiformes and Siluriformes ichthyofauna of these basins from the Amazonian Dry Lowlands includes native species, is possible to identify some individuality in the Capim ichthyofauna. For example, small sized species of the families Anostomidae, as observed by Garavello and Santos [21], Characidae, Curimatidae, Auchenipteridae, Doradidae, Pimelodidae and Loricariidae are much frequent than the own large ones of each family suggesting a selection of species on basis of size in the Capim River. This event is also very common in the Tocantins River, while it is uncommon in Guamá River basin.…”

“…Ferreira, Oliveira, Venere, Galetti Jr., and Martins (2007), Olivatti et al (2011) and Garavello et al (2021) investigated genetic characters of genera from this family. Garavello and Santos (2009) found a species identified as Leporinus unitaeniatus and stated that there is a shortage of taxonomic information about the specimens of the genus Leporinus for the Tocantins/Araguaia basin. Britski and Birindelli (2008) described a new species of this genus in the basin, distinct from the other two (Leporinus parae and Leporinus lacustris) in dental pattern and habitat preference.…”
