Limnological study of a Pantanal saline lake

Abstract: Limnological studies involving physical, chemical and biological aspects, with emphasis on the zooplankton community, were carried out in a saline lake of the Pantanal floodplain, in the subregion of Nhecolândia (Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil), during the dry and wet seasons of the local hydrological cycle. The results show that the lake is not directly affected by the flood-pulse through superficial coalescence, probably receiving groundwater instead. Most of the measured variables showed extremely high values, … Show more

“…The "baías and salitradas" are freshwater lakes, with a pH ranging from 5 to 8, macrophytes are present inside and surrounding them, and during the flood period (rainy season) they are coalescent with other aquatic systems as "corixos and vazantes" (Barbiéro et al 2002). The "salinas" are alkaline lakes, isolated from other lakes by a stripe of dry land covered by savanna vegetation ("cordilheiras"), contain brackish water, pH >8, and the macrophytes are totally absent (Brum & Sousa 1985, Mourão et al 1988, Barbiéro et al 2002, Medina-Júnior & Rietzler 2005, Almeida et al 2011.…”

“…To answer this question, more information about the number, location, geochemistry and biological importance of these ecosystems is required. It is known, however, that these hundreds of small lakes present varying degrees of productivity and coalescence with the flooding regime of the Pantanal (Medina-Ju´nior and Rietzler, 2005), serve as a nesting, food and mineral source for wildlife (Por, 1995), and possibly represent a significant number of lakes in the Pantanal.…”
