ABSTRACT. Checklist of the Rotifera (Animalia) from Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. This study comprises a list of rotifer taxa found in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, gleaned from the scientifi c literature. The studies were divided in fi ve general areas: (1) the River Paraguay, (2) the Pantanal of Nhecolândia, (3) the rivers Miranda, Abobral and Itaqueri, (4) a reservoir in the city of Campo Grande, and (5) rivers, lakes and canals of the River Paraná. In total, 364 taxa were registered, with the families Lecanidae, Trichocercidae and Brachionidae showing greatest taxonomic richness, with 72, 32 and 30 taxa, respectively. The greatest taxon richness was found in the area of the River Paraná (244 taxa), followed by the River Paraguay in the region of the city of Corumbá (with 154 taxa), and the freshwater lakes of Nhecolândia (with 148 taxa). This pattern is most probably due to the quantity and quality of the studies carried out in these areas.
ABSTRACT. Checklist of the tecamoeba (Testacea) from Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. This study compiled the information on the occurrence of the testate amoeba (Protozoa: Testacea) in the Mato Grosso do Sul State. It was recorded 19 genera and 138 infrageneric taxa in the state. All these taxa were found in the Upper Paraná River basin, and only six of them were found in the Upper Paraguay River Basin. The taxonomic diversity in the Mato Grosso do Sul state was higher than São Paulo State, and comparable to the diversity recorded in the Central west and North Brazilian regions. Despite this diversity, there are few studies with no testacea and researchers living in the state.
A cytogenetic study was carried out on the early embryonic stages of the cyclopoid species Mesocyclops longisetus longisetus (Crustacea, Copepoda) from freshwater environments of the São Carlos area of south-east Brazil. Chromatin was staining using acetic orcein solution. The species showed 2n = 14 chromosomes and presented chromatin diminution in the 4 th embryonic cleavage. The eliminated chromatin was concentrated in the equatorial region of the embryonic cell. The results were compared with data for other cyclopoid species of temperate regions.Key words: Cyclopoida, Mesocyclops longisetus longisetus, cytogenetics, chromatin diminution, chromosomal number.
The Taquari River is one of the most important tributaries of the Paraguay River, whose sediments are carried and deposited on the plain forming the largest alluvial fan in the world, known as Pantanal. In the floodplain, the course of the river has been modified by the sedimentation process, resulting in lakes with different degrees of connectivity with the river. This study assessed the influence of connectivity on the physical and chemical characteristics of water along a hydrological cycle in oxbow lakes of the Taquari River floodplain, in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Sampling was carried out monthly, from May 2005 to June 2006.The physical and chemical data of the water and the variables of river level and rainfall intensity were correlated by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Limnological differences resulted from distinct degrees of connectivity between the oxbow lakes and the Taquari River. Variations in the dry and rainy seasons established a gradient that extends over a space-time continuum and generates greater environmental heterogeneity and, consequently, greater biodiversity. Thus we conclude that this mosaic of lakes and the surrounding landscape requires protection and preservation because of its importance for biodiversity conservation.
Palavras-chave: água doce, bacia do Alto Paraguai, bacia do Paraná, microalgas.ABSTRACT -Checklist of the Phytoplankton species from Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. In the Mato Grosso do Sul state were recorded ten classes and 339 species, where the greatest richness were recorded in the Chlorophyceae (66 species), Euglenophyceae (45 species), Cyanophyceae (34 species), Bacillariophyceae (25 species) and Zygnemaphyceae (16 species). In the Paraná River basin were recorded 142 species (42%) and in the Alto Paraguay River basin were recorded 197 species (58%) and 55 species were common in the two Rivers basins (16%). We discuss the knowledge gaps and potential studies of the phytoplankton communities in the state.
