Characterization of the imaginal reproductive diapause of Oebalus poecilus (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae)

Abstract: The state of development of the internal reproductive organs of male and female Oebalus poecilus (Dallas) as well as the body fat amount in the abdominal cavity during hibernation, of individuals sampled in bamboo litter in Eldorado do Sul (30º02'S and 51°23'W), RS, Brazil was investigated. Females and males showed the abdominal cavity filled with body fat in the beginning of the hibernation phase. The decrease in fat reserve level occurred from August on for males and from October on for females. Ovaries and … Show more

“…The vas deferens (through which the sperm travels) and the 'seminal vesicle' (where the sperms is stored prior to mating) are long and cylindrical, and of the same red color as the testis. Testes, vas deferens and the seminal vesicle in O. poecilus are long and orange (Santos et al, 2003). The seminal vesicle connects to the bulbus ejaculatorius which is balloon shaped and covered by irregularly shaped accessory glands.…”

“…The internal reproductive morphology of some Pentatomids, Nezara virudula (Linnaeus, 1758) (Pendergrast, 1956;Ramamurty, 1969), Chrysocoris stolli Wolf. (Singh, 1968), Perillus bioculatus (Fabricius, 1775) (Adams, 2001), Oebalus poecilus (Dallas, 1851) (Santos et al, 2003), Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas, 1851) (Lemos et al, 2005;Rodrigues Agna et al, 2008) have been the subject of detailed studies with emphasis on function. Morphologically, the male reproductive system consists of paired testes which each containing a series of testicular tubes or follicles (in which spermatozoa are produced).…”
