First report of the red palm mite, Raoiella indica Hirst (Acari: Tenuipalpidae), in Brazil

Abstract: The presence of the red palm mite, Raoiella indica Hirst, is reported for the first time in Brazil. This invasive mite was found in July 2009 infesting coconut palms and bananas in urban areas of Boa Vista, State of Roraima, in northern Brazil. Comments on the possible pathways of R. indica into the country, present and potential impact of its introduction and mitigating measures to prevent or to delay the mite spread in Brazil are presented.

“…However, this pest was unexpectedly found on Martinique Island, in the Caribbean Sea [20]. This mite rapidly spread across the Caribbean, being detected in the United States in 2007, Venezuela in 2007 and Brazil in 2009 [21]. This case is particularly interesting because, before the introduction in Martinique, this invasion in Brazil could be classified as highly unlikely at least in the short term.…”

“…The recent and frequent introductions of other pest species of quarantine importance into Brazil through the state of Roraima -such as the Hindustan citrus mite, Schizotetranichus hindustanicus (Hirst) (Prostigmata: Tetranychidae) (Navia and Marsaro Júnior, 2010), the red palm mite, Raoiella indica Hirst (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) (Navia et al, 2011), the pink hibiscus mealybug, Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) (Marsaro Júnior et al, 2013), and the scale insect Lecanodiaspis dendrobii Douglas (Hemiptera: Lecanodiaspididae) (Marsaro Júnior et al, 2016) -show the vulnerability of the Brazilian borders with the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and with Venezuela, when it comes to intercepting and avoiding the entry of exotic pests. This reinforces the need for larger investments in phytosanitary defense in Brazil, especially in border regions.…”
