Abstract: -The mite fauna was assessed in bean, maize and pet food in supermarkets and markets in Recife, PE, Brazil. A 500 g sample of each grain and food was collected in each establishment at two weekly intervals, from August 2002 to June 2003. The sample was divided into two 250 g subsamples. “…In Brazil, the first account of the presence of mites belonging to the family Pyemotidae referred to the species Pyemotes ventricosus ectoparasitizing the pink bollworm Pectinophora gossypiella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) of the cotton plant (Costa Lima, 1917). Pyemotid mites were also reported in a study on the diversity of mite fauna in beans, maize, and feed grains in supermarkets and free fairs in the city of Recife, PE, Brazil (Sousa et al, 2005). These mites do not feed on grains but are ectoparasitoids of insects infesting the grains sampled in the study.…”

“…Population dynamic studies also support that hypothesis. de Sousa et al ( 2005 ) found specimens of B. tarsalis throughout the year in food samples obtained from retailers. However, the levels of infestation were much higher in June, coinciding with the middle of the rainy season.…”

Outra metade de cada amostra foi mantida no laboratório em um saco plástico durante 30 dias, antes de ser submetidas à extração pelo mesmo procedimento (Sousa et al, 2005 …”
