Between January and August 2012, thirty specimens of Cynoscion guatucupa (Cuvier, 1830) caught off coast of the municipality of Itajaí, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil (26° 54' 28" S and 48° 39' 43" W) and commercialized in the state of Rio de Janeiro were investigated for the presence of zoonotic nematodes. In total 853 larvae of four nematode parasite species were found. There were three species of Anisakidae: three larvae of Anisakis sp., with prevalence (P) of 10%, mean intensity (MI) of 1.0, mean abundance (MA) of 0.1 and infection site (IS) in the mesentery; five of Terranova sp. with P = 13.3%, MI = 1.25, MA = 0.17, range of infection (RI) from 1 to 2 and IS = mesentery; and seven of Contracaecum sp. with P = 6.6%, MI = 3.5, MA = 0.23, RI = 1 to 4 and IS = mesentery and abdominal cavity. There was one species of Raphidascarididae: 838 larvae of Hysterothylacium deardorffoverstreetorum with P = 83.3%, MI = 33.52, MA = 27.93, RI = 1 to 219 and IS = mesentery, liver serosa and abdominal cavity. Meglitschia mylei n. sp. found in the gall bladder of the teleostean fish Myleus rubripinnis (Serrasalmidae) from the middle Amazonian region of Brazil is described using light and transmission electron microscopy. The spores observed in the bile averaged 24.6±0.8 μm long, 8.7±0.4 μm wide and 5.1±0.3 μm thick and were strongly furcate and arcuate ∩-shaped composed of two symmetric equal-sized valves, up to ∼70 nm thick. Each valve possessed one opposed tapering appendage, 20.1±0.7 μm long, oriented parallel towards the basal tip of the appendages and joined along a right suture line forming a thick strand. The strand goes around the central part of the spore, which in turn surrounds two equal and symmetric spherical polar capsules (PC), 2.1±0.3 μm in diameter, located at the same level. Each capsule contains a polar filament with five (rarely six) coils. The binucleate sporoplasm was irregular in shape, contained several sporoplasmosomes, ∼175 nm in diameter and filled all the space of the two caudal appendages. Based on the arc shape of the spore with two tapering caudal appendages oriented to the basis of spores, on the number and position of the PC and of the polar filament coils and arrangements, and on the host specificity, we propose the name M. mylei n. sp. for this new myxozoan. Accordingly, this is the second described species of this genus.

The aim of this study was to verify the immunogenicity of Pterobothrium heteracanthum (Cestoda: Trypanorhyncha) crude protein extract (PH-CPE) in BALB/c mice. The parasites were obtained from Micropogonias furnieri (Osteichthyes: Sciaenidae). Groups of six mice were each immunized with 10, 50 or 100 μg of PH-CPE, on days 0 and 35. Both specific IgG and IgE responses were developed after immunization. The immunoblot assay revealed that specific IgG recognizes PH-CPE proteins with two molecular weight ranges, 60-75 and 30-40 kDa, and that IgE recognizes larger proteins over 120 kDa. This appears to be the first report on the immunogenicity of metacestodes within the Pterobothriidae and that PH-CPE is a potential inducer of a specific IgE response.

Um procedimento em batelada é proposto para separação e pré-concentração de cádmio, chumbo, níquel e zinco em amostras de salmoura. O método baseia-se na adsorção dos íons metálicos sobre a fase sólida composta de ditizona co-cristalizada com naftaleno microcristalino, na faixa de pH de 8,5 -9,1. Ácido nítrico é utilizado para re-extrair os cátions da fase sólida, os quais são determinados por ICP-OES. Vários parâmetros, tais como efeito do pH, do tempo de agitação e da quantidade da fase sólida foram estudados sistematicamente visando otimizar as condições para a determinação de quantidades traço de Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni e Zn em amostras sintéticas de salmoura. Os limites de detecção obtidos, expressos em µg L -1 , foram: 44 (Zn), 11 (Ni), 30 (Cd), 47 (Pb) e 11 (Cu). A precisão do procedimento foi estabelecida pela medida de 10 replicatas com 250 µg L -1 de cada íon e os desvios padrão relativos foram de 2,71 % (Cd), 2,15 % (Cu), 1,53 % (Pb), 2,47 % (Ni) e 2,78 % (Zn). A exatidão do procedimento foi confirmada pelo método de adição de analitos e os resultados obtidos indicaram recuperação quantitativa (≥ 95 %).A procedure for separation and pre-concentration of trace amounts of cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc in brine samples has been proposed. It is based on the adsorption of metal ions onto dithizone co-crystallized with microcrystalline naphthalene, in the pH range 8.5-9.1. Nitric acid is used to back-extract the cations from the solid phase, which are measured by ICP-OES. Various parameters, such as the effect of pH, stirring time, and amounts of solid phase, have been studied in detail, to optimize the conditions for the determination of trace amounts of Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni and Zn in synthetic brine samples. The limits of detection values expressed in µg L -1 are 44 (Zn), 11 (Ni), 30 (Cd), 47 (Pb) and 11 (Cu). The precision of the procedure was determined by running 10 replicate samples, each one containing 250 µg L -1 of each element and the relative standard deviations were 2.71 % (Cd), 2.15 % (Cu), 1.53 % (Pb), 2.47 % (Ni), and 2.78 % (Zn). The accuracy of the procedure was confirmed by applying the analyte additions method and the results indicated that quantitative recoveries (≥ 95 %) were obtained.

Pyemotidae mites are ectoparasites of a large number of arthropods, and Pyemotes tritici (Acari: Pyemotidae) is often found parasitizing insects in various habitats, including in the laboratory. Here we report widespread infestation of P. tritici in laboratory colonies of various species of stored-products insects. P. tritici infestations were observed in laboratory colonies (MIPGrains/UFV) of Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Alphitobius diaperinus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), Lasioderma serricorne (Coleoptera: Anobiidae), Acanthoscelides obtectus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), Rhyzopertha dominica (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), Ephestia sp. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), and Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). The widespread infestation of P. tritici in laboratory colonies of these species is a serious problem. This mite can substantially reduce insect populations or even kill them, making it impossible to rear the insects, as observed in this research. This ectoparasite is not recommended as a biological control agent in integrated pest management of stored-product pests because P. tritici can attack bees, mammals, and other animals and cause dermatitis in humans.
