Lippia sidoidesCham. (Verbenaceae) is a species native to the Brazilian northeast, widely used in popular medicine. Its leaves were used for the isolation of endophytic fungi and extraction of metabolites. Among them, three were selected according to fungitoxicity tests against the maize phytopathogenic fungus, Curvularia lunata (Wakker). However, the objective of this study was to identify the role of L. sidoides extracts associated with their endophytic fungi, necessary to reduce excess of fungicides applied on the maize crop. Metabolites were evaluated for antioxidant activity by 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), phenols, total flavonoids and one of it endophytic fungus were evaluated for synergism (Verticilium sp. and plant extracts). The endophytic fungi and plant extracts evaluated for phenolic content ranged from 0.29 ± 0.05 to 96.94 ± 11.86 mgEAG/g, the content of flavonoids from 14.31 ± 1.56 to 192.33 ± 4.58 mgER/g, and antioxidant activity could only be observed for the plant extract with EC 50 81 ± 0.3%. The secondary metabolites identified by HPLC in the plant extract were catechin, quercetin, gallic acid and naringin. Naringenin, catechin, epigallocatechin gallate and quercetin were identified in the extract of the fungi viz. Verticillium sp. and Fusarium sp. Synergistic analysis between a 1:1 proportion of plant and fungal extracts has shown more efficient (79.0%) inhibition of C. lunata. Thus, alternative control of phytopathogenic fungi can be accomplished using plant extracts associated with their endophytic fungi, reducing the excess of fungicides applied on the maize crop.

RESUMOObjetivou-se descrever o padrão florístico-estrutural, as características ecológicas e os potenciais das Myrtaceae na bacia hidrográfica do Rio Caveiras. As comunidades de Myrtaceae estudadas localizam-se no Planalto Sul Catarinense, Lages, São José do Cerrito e Urupema. Foram instaladas quatro blocos por município, totalizando 30 mil m 2 de área amostral, nos quais todos os espécimes de Myrtaceae com diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) ≥ 5 cm foram amostrados. A estrutura da comunidade de Myrtaceae foi avaliada pelos descritores fitossociológicos e a suficiência amostral foi verificada utilizando-se o método de rarefação. As abordagens ecológicas e indicações de uso não madeireiro basearam-se em bibliografia especializada e base de dados científicos. Foram amostrados 1.480 exemplares de Myrtaceae pertencentes a 21 espécies e 11 gêneros. As espécies mais abundantes foram Myrceugenia euosma, Siphoneugena reitzii e Myrcia palustris, as quais representaram mais de 50% da estrutura da comunidade. Quanto à classificação ecológica, destacou-se o grupo das secundárias iniciais (57%). As espécies amostradas são indicadas para restauração de áreas alteradas, usos ornamentais (100%) e fitoterápicos (60%). Apesar da representatividade e potencialidades das Myrtaceae, ainda são necessárias pesquisas para embasar a conservação via plano de manejo.Palavras-chave: classificação ecológica, restauração de áreas alteradas, uso fitoterápico. Myrtaceae in the Caveiras River Basin: Ecological Characteristics and Non-timber Uses ABSTRACTThis study aimed to describe the floristic-structural pattern, ecological characteristics and potentials of Myrtaceae in the Caveiras River Basin. The studied Myrtaceae communities are localized in Santa Catarina Southern Plateau -municipalities of Lages, São José do Cerrito and Urupema. Four sampling units were installed in each municipality, totaling a sampling area of 30,000 m 2 . All Myrtaceae individuals with DBH ≥ 5 cm were surveyed within the sampling units. The Myrtaceae community structure was assessed through phytosociological descriptors and the sampling sufficiency was verified using the rarefaction method. The ecological approach, as well as the indication of non-timber use of Myrtaceae resources was inferred from a specialized bibliography and scientific database. 1,480 Myrtaceae individuals were sampled, totaling 21 species and 11 genera. Antibacterial activity of extracts of Zanthoxylum gilletii, Markhamia lutea and their fungal endophytes were evaluated against bacterial pathogens of common bean: Xanthomonus axonopodis pv. phaseoli and Pseudomonus syringae pv. phaseolicola. The leaves of both plants were dried under shade, ground to fine powder and extracted using methanol. The methanol extracts were fractionated sequentially using ethylacetate and hexane to produce various fractions. Endophytic fungi were isolated from fresh leaves and identified by ITS-rDNA sequence analysis. Antibacterial screening of the fungal endophytes was done by dual culture assay. The most active endophytic fungi were fermented on rice media and extracted using methanol. Pure compounds were analyzed by a combination of mass spectrometry and spectroscopic techniques which included 1D and 2D NMR. Antibacterial activity of all the extracts was determined by disc agar diffusion assay against the test organisms. Twenty-four (24) fungal endophytes were isolated which included: Fusarium, Chaetomium, Scopulariopsis and Trametes. Endophytic Fusarium solani was the most active against X. axonopodis pv. phaseoli (20.3 mm inhibition zone) and P. syringae pv. phaseolicola (18.6 mm inhibition zone). The plant extracts were active against X. axonopodis pv. phaseoli with an inhibition zone ranging between 8-12 mm except the methanol extract from Z. gilletii which did not show any activity. The endophytic extracts were active against both test organisms with a zone of inhibition ranging from 9.3-14 mm. Phenolic compounds present in Fusarium species may have contributed to the antibacterial activity of this strain against the test organisms.
