Antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities screening of some Brazilian medicinal plants used in Governador Valadares district

Abstract: Ethanol extracts from medicinal plants commonly used by Governador Valadares people were tested for antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity (BST assay). The field survey was conducted during the years 1997-2000 by means of direct interviews with healing men ("raizeiros") who showed familiarity with local used remedies. A total of 33 crude extracts from 32 plant species was studied. Ten extracts (Costus pisonis,

“…Ethnopharmacological studies have recommended the use of this plant to treat digestive problems. However, P. ornatus leaves have been used by healing men and farmers, in some regions of Brazil, as an antibiotic for the treatment of skin infections (Brasileiro et al 2006, Diaz et al 2010. Ethno veterinary practices using P. ornatus leaves have become very common as a viable and alternative treatment method, as these leaves are safe, easy to obtain, and inexpensive, they can be found on small farms, and they represent a less aggressive method to heal animals.…”

“…The pharmacological activities (antispasmodic, soothing, and stomach disorders) of its essential oils have triggered the interest of researchers in establishing their effects which resulted in the detection of other important properties, including the aromatic (Frighetto & Oliveira, 1998) and biological ones (Cáceres et al, 1991;Abad et al, 1997;Alea et al, 1997;Brasileiro et al, 2006). Currently L. alba is a promising plant for the pharmaceutical, aromatic, and perfume industries and may also be indicated for agricultural-chemical industries, due to its proven fungitoxic, insecticidal, and repellent properties (Dubey et al, 1983;Dwivedi & Kishore, 1990;Kishore & Mishra, 1991;Rao et al, 2000;Schwan-Estrada et al, 2000;Ibrahim et al, 2001).…”

“…Antibacterial activity: The antibacterial action was ascertained by determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), according to Brasileiro et al (2006) ), according to the National Committee For Clinical Laboratory Standards (1997). A 0.1 mL aliquot of bacterial suspension containing 10 8 CFC mL -1 was mixed with 100 mL of sterilized solution of Tween 80 (2%) and this mixture was then used in the assay.…”

“…Previous results from this study have shown that determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), adapted from Brasileiro et al (2006) with modifications, allows quantitative estimation of the antibacterial activity. For this test, several sequential dilutions of the samples with antibacterial activity were incorporated into the medium, added to the bacterium and incubated for 24 hours.…”
