Antibacterial activity of Apocynaceae extracts and MIC of Tabernaemontana angulata stem organic extract

Abstract: Thirty-eight aqueous and organic extracts obtained from 11 Amazonian Apocynaceae species were submitted to an antimicrobial dilution in broth media screening for Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans, performed on microtiter plates. The organic extract obtained from the stem of Tabernaemontana angulata presented activity against Gram positive Staphylococcus aureus. The minimal inhibitory concentration of the organic crude extract was 2.50-1.25 mg/mL. Cloramphenicol was used as stan… Show more

“…Com grande capacidade invasora, possui potencial uso em programas de recuperação de áreas degradadas, devido à intensa regeneração espontânea em formações vegetais abertas (LORENZI, 2010). Além desse grande potencial, estudos de espécies do gênero estão sendo realizados, devido às suas propriedades medicinais, antimicrobianas e bactericidas (SUFFREDINI et al, 2002;GONÇALVES et al, 2011).…”

“…This evidence contributes to support and quantify the importance of screening natural products. Previous screening works were done with more than 700 Amazon rain forest plant extracts, and results can be seen elsewhere (Frana & Suffredini 2002, Suffredini et al 2002a, b 2004, Nepomuceno et al 2003.Less than 20% of the Angiospermae have been screened for biological activity, and taking the Brazilian rain forests in concern, not much has been done so far. Brazil is home to more than 20% of the world's biodiversity, and the Amazon rain forest concentrates 17% of the biodiversity found within the country (Wilson & Peter 1988).…”
