Evaluation of the effects of pressure gradients on four Brazilian freshwater fish species

Abstract: This work aimed to experimentally evaluate the behavior of Brazilian freshwater fish species when submitted to a gradual increase in pressure, as well as sudden decompression's effects simulating the passage through a hydroelectric turbine. Four species from the São Francisco river basin were tested: Astyanax bimaculatus, Hypostomus sp., Leporinus reinhardti and Prochilodus costatus. For all of them mortality rates due to decompression were extremely low. However, the symptoms related to decompression, such as… Show more

“…The only evidence for the effectiveness of bypass types (hypothesis G2) and mortality due to blade strike (T2, T3), shear and turbulence (T4) during turbine entrainment was limited to a single species, A. anguilla. Evidence for the effect of pressure fluctuations on mortality due to barotrauma came from just two studies investigating a total of four species; Entosphenus tridentatus Petromyzontidae and Lampetra richardonii Petromyzontidae in Colotelo et al (2012) and Astyanax bimaculatus Characidae and Leporinus reinhardtii Anostomidae in Pompeu et al (2009). However, it could be misleading to include lamprey (e.g.…”

“…Migratory fish are particularly affected by dams (Agostinho et al, 2007). During downstream translocation fish are frequently injured or killed (Cada, 2001) while passing through the turbines or outlet spillways (Larinier & Travade, 2002;Antonio et al, 2007;Pompeu et al, 2009). The sudden pressure drop causes drastic changes in swimbladder volume (Agostinho et al, 2007), often causing them to burst (Therrien & Bourgeois, 2000).…”
