The fate of copepod populations in the Paranapanema River (São Paulo, Brazil), downstream from the Jurumirim dam

Abstract: The longitudinal changes in the structure of copepod populations were examined during the dry and rainy seasons in a 42 km stretch of the Paranapanema River downstream from the dam of the Jurumirim Reservoir. Samples were taken in the "lacustrine" zone of the reservoir near the dam, and also at 12 stations distributed in the middle and the lateral regions of the channel of the Paranapanema River downstream from the dam. The following species of Cyclopoida were found at the sites: Thermocyclops decipiens, Therm… Show more

“…This pattern of decreasing abundance could also be observed in other studies performed in environments located downstream of reservoirs (Mitsuka & Henry, 2002;Chang et al, 2008;Perbiche-Neves et al, 2012;Grabowska et al, 2013).…”

“…This decrease in abundance is probably caused by the influence of flow velocity in the stretch downstream of the reservoir (Mitsuka & Henry, 2002;Chang et al, 2008;Portinho et al, 2016). Thus, there is an expressive contribution of the reservoir fauna for the community structure immediately downstream of the reservoir, which frequently suffers a decrease along the dowstream stretch, which exhibits with lotic characteristics.…”

“…In Brazil, the most studied reservoir ecosystems are located in the Southeast, South and West regions, such as the Paranoá in Brasilia, Pampulha in Minas Gerais, Monte Alegre and Jurumirim in São Paulo and Segredo in Paraná. Many studies have been carried out in these regions on the composition and diversity of zooplankton, especially concerning the Rotifera and Crustacea (Cabianca and Sendacz, 1985;MatsumuraTundisi et al, 1990;Arcifa et al, 1998;Güntzel and Rocha, 1998;Nogueira, 2001;Panarelli et al, 2001;Mitsuka and Henry, 2002).…”

“…These environments transform lotic in lentic environments, causing reduction of water flow and more deposition of fine sediment, increase of deep and water transparency, modifying also the physical and chemical conditions and the structure of biological communities (Tundisi, 1986;Palmer et al, 2000). These consequences can be observed in compartments along reservoirs and downstream it dams (Nogueira, 2000(Nogueira, , 2001Mitsuka & Henry, 2002). Among the several communities of aquatic ecosystems affected by a new lentic environment, the benthic macroinvertebrates show an important tool in recycling nutrients and in the change of energy and mass among trophic levels (Santos et al, 2015).…”
