Zooplanktonic community of six reservoirs in northeast Brazil

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate the zooplankton community at six reservoirs in the state of Pernambuco (Brazil). Zooplankton assemblages were identified using current literature and quantitatively analysed under a microscope and stereomicroscope. Concurrently to the sampling of zooplanktonic and phytoplanktonic communities, in situ measurements of abiotic variables, such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH, were determined using field probes and transparency was determined with a Secc… Show more

“…They are generally present in great numbers and with high species richness in tropical zooplankton, being opportunistic organisms capable of colonizing a wide variety of habitats, from temporarily flooded areas (Koste & Robertson 1990, Lima et al 1996, Garcia et al 1998, Martínez et al 2000, LansacTôha et al 2009) to large rivers, lakes and reservoirs (Oliveira Neto & Moreno 1999, Aoyagui & Bonecker. 2004, Sendacz et al 2006, Corgosinho & Pinto-Coelho, 2006, Almeida et al 2009, Borges & Pedrozo, 2009.…”

“…According to Maltchik (2000), the semiarid lakes are considered true biodiversity hotspots and perhaps therefore the richness of cladocerans in the Pimenteira temporary pond can be considered high when compared with other studies performed in artificial lentic environments (Crispim and Watanabe, 2001;Melo Júnior et al, 2007;Almeida et al, 2009). In the Neotropical region, Aranguren-Riaño et al (2011) analyzed 15 large lentic ecosystems and recorded a total of 19 cladoceran species, leading the authors to conclude that this richness was related to the large catchment area of the springs.…”
