Effect of Biofertilizers and Neem Oil on the Entomopathogenic Fungi Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok

Abstract: The in vitro fungitoxic effect of three biofertilizers, Multibion TM and Supermagro used in organic agriculture and the neem oil (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) on the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana was studied. These products were mixed in a medium where the two fungi were inoculated, and germination, vegetative growth and conidiogenesis were assessed. The biofertilizers showed to be less toxic for the two fungi whereas Multibion™ caused major inhibition on M. anisopliae,… Show more

“…Hirose et al (2001) observed 45% reduction in spore germination of B. bassiana when mixed with neem oil at 2%. Therefore, the mixture of aqueous oil emulsion and spores of the pest-controlling entomopathogen, must be avoided.…”

“…The difference between the results reported in those studies and the results observed in this work may be due to the variability in the amount de triterpenoids and other compounds in neem seeds, which are used for the formulation of commercial products (Sidhu et al 2004), or to emulsifiers and stabilizers used in manufacturing. However, negative effects caused by emulsible neem oil, to the entomopathogen, are reported by Bajan et al (1998) and Hirose et al (2001).…”

“…According to Hirose et al (2001), the use of chemicals which are incompatible with fungi can inhibit the development and reproduction of these microorganisms, thus affecting an effective biological control. This incompatibility has been reported by studies which have demonstrated the influence of chemicals on entomopathogenic fungus viability (Barci et al, 2009) although, in another study, the fungus and insecticide employees were considered compatible, allowing their joint use in controlling (Anhalt et al, 2010).…”

“…Vuill dan Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok, umum digunakan dalam pengendalian hama pada budidaya tanaman secara organik (Hirose et al 2001). Pada tanaman padi, B. bassiana dapat digunakan untuk pengendalian WBC (Baehaki 2009).…”
