“…It is known that the most common alleles among the population studied in southern region of Parana´, Brazil, are HLA-A Ã 02, B Ã 35, and DRB1 Ã 11 (35), and in the northeastern State of Pernambuco the allelic group HLA-B Ã 15 is the most frequent (18). Verification showed that the most common allele occurrences of HLA-A Ã 02, DRB1 Ã 11, and DRB1 Ã 07 were compatible with the occurrence of this allele in the Caucasian population and provide an additional contribution to studies concerning the genetic structure of the southern Brazilian population.…”

“…Studies carried out in Paraná (Braun‐Prado et al ., ; Probst et al ., ; Bicalho et al ., ; Ruiz et al ., ; Bardi et al ., ), Rio Grande do Sul (Bortolotto et al ., ), Rio de Janeiro (Moraes et al ., ), Minas Gerais (Williams et al ., ), Goiás (Trachtenberg et al ., ), Piauí (Monte et al ., ; Carvalho et al ., ), Pernambuco (Nigam et al ., ) and different regions in the state of São Paulo (Donadi et al ., 2000b; Louzada‐Junior et al ., ; Morgun et al ., ; Temin et al ., ; Salvadori et al ., ) have shown the diversity of HLA genes in regional populations.…”

“…Although immunosuppressive drugs reduce the possibility of rejection, HLA compatibility is the factor that provides the best prognosis for a successful procedure. 1 Currently HLA-A, -B and -DRB1 are matched as one of the first phase criteria in the search of compatible donors for recipients on the waiting list.…”

“…Recombination events between alleles in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) regions occur with a frequency of 2–4%. 1 For this reason, HLA genes are inherited in a tight cluster of closely linked genes or haplotypes. They code for the most immunogenic proteins known to date and knowledge about the HLA profile of patient and donor is an important issue in the context of cell and tissue transplantation.…”
