Studies on carbon-13 turnover in eggs and blood of commercial layers

Abstract: This paper aimed at evaluating the influence of diets containing different isotopic values of carbon-13 turnover on the half-life of egg (yolk + albumen), yolk and albumen individually, and blood of poultry using δ‰ 13 C isotopic variation. Commercial layers fed four experimental isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets (RC 4 , RC 3 , RMC 4 and RMC 3 ) containing different isotopic values, during an experimental period of 56 days. Turnover of the studied tissues was influenced by the experimental diets. Blood and a… Show more

“…The isotope fractionation factor of the eggs and their fractions (Table 4) was different between the collection days (1-28 days and 29-56 days). The difference may have been caused by changing the diet on day 28 and not by the lack of time to allow a new isotopic signature, since Denadai et al (2006) analysed the isotopic turnover in 120-week-old laying hens and found that the values of total isotopic exchange of δ 13 C varied between 29 and 35 days, depending on the treatment.…”

“…Com a introdução das dietas experimentais (Tabela 2), esses valores se alteraram, e a mudança isotópica dos ovos acompanhou a mudança da respectiva dieta, comprovando que houve substituição total isotópica dos tecidos que formavam esses ovos, como afirmado por Denadai et al (2006) de que a substituição total dos carbonos nos ovos levou de 24,5 a 33,6 dias, conforme a mudança das dietas.…”

“…Poultry nutrition studies using stable isotopes in diet as markers produce estimates the rate with which tissue stable isotopes are replaced by those present in the diet (Denadai et al, 2007;Gottmann et al, 2008;Pelícia et al, 2011;Araujo et al, 2011;Sernagiotto et al, 2013). Labeled compounds can also be used as biological markers .…”

“…Breast muscle, liver, and abdominal fat samples were dried on a forced-ventilation oven at 56°C for 72 h. Both experimental diets and dried tissue samples were ground in a cryogenic mill to obtain a homogeneous material with fine particle size (smaller than 60 µm) (Ducatti, 2007). After grinding, fat was extracted from liver samples for 4 hours in ethyl ether using a Soxhlet extractor.…”
