The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of substituting soybean meal for urea in diets based on deferred buffelgrass on the performance of feedlot sheep. Thirty mixed-breed sheep with an average initial body weight of 17±1.5 kg were distributed in a completely randomized design in which the experimental treatments consisted of five diets with six replicates. Diets were composed of deferred buffelgrass plus concentrates and calculated to be isoproteic. Treatments were represented by the substitution of soybean meal for the urea levels (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%). Nutrient intake did not differ among animals fed diets with urea levels. Hot and cold carcass weights, hot and cold carcass dressing percentages, initial and final pH, and weight of commercial cuts did not differ among animal fed diets with urea levels. There was no difference for non-carcass components among animals, except for the empty carcass, gall bladder, and perirenal fat weights, which were influenced by dietary urea levels. Substituting the crude protein from soybean meal for the protein from urea provides a similar performance in sheep consuming deferred buffelgrass.

RESUMO: A demanda por proteína animal tem aumentado consideravelmente. Diante da situação faz-se necessário tecnologias que permitam acréscimos na produtividade com vista na sustentabilidade. Dessa forma, considerando os sistemas em pasto serem a forma mais barata de produzir carne, a suplementação deve ser considerada ou as condições de subnutrição aceitas. As gramíneas tropicais possuem uma estacionalidade de produção, bem como uma variação nos componentes nutricionais, sendo a suplementação do pasto capaz de minimizar as características da baixa qualidade das forrageiras durante o período seco, e o diferimento das pastagens torna-se uma ferramenta para melhorar a disponibilidade do pasto. A suplementação animal no período seco permite maior crescimento de microrganismos ruminais devido ao aumento de nutrientes que sao disponibilizados via suplementação, aumentando o consumo e digestibilidade da forragem, consequentemente melhorando o aproveitamento dos alimentos disponíveis. Objetivou-se avaliar a suplementação na época da seca, bem como suas causas e efeitos, por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica. Palavras-chave: nutrição, diferimento, rendimento econômico .

The objective of this study was to evaluate the supplementation with mineral salt (SALT), proteic and mineral salt (PMS) and energetic-proteic supplement (EPS), respectively, provided ad libitum, 0.2% and 0.8% of body weight (BW) on dry matter forage intake (DMFI), grazing time and performance of cattle during the dry season (June to August). The performance was evaluated in 48 steers with an average initial BW of 310 + 50 kg, distributed in 15 paddocks of Brachiaria decumbens, with the DMFI and grazing time evaluated in 18 steers. Compared with animals consuming SALT, the DMFI was reduced in 26% for those supplemented with EPS, without differences with the animals supplemented with PMS. Grazing time was reduced in 16 and 90 minutes day -1 , respectively, for animals supplemented with PMS and EPS, compared to animals without supplementation. There was an interaction (P<0. x period for average daily gain (ADG) not being different in the initial month (0.76 kg animal -1 day -1 ), however, in the second month the animals receiving SALT gained 0.07 kg animal -1 day -1 , significantly (P<0.01) less than the animals of PMS and EPS, in which the ADG was 0.56 and 0.73 kg animal -1 day -1 , respectively. The use of pasture supplementation with PMS and EPS is interesting to aim higher weight gains of cattle during the dry season, but supplementation with PMS did not alter the DMFI, being one efficient way to supply the nutrients to the animals during this period.
