The development of the digestive system in larvae of the Neotropical fish P. argenteus was analyzed histologically. On the 3 rd day after hatching, the digestive system comprised oropharyngeal cavity, esophagus and simple undifferentiated tube. Since secreting cells, positive to Alcian Blue (AB), were found in the esophagus, digestive activity in the initial phase had occurred. On the 18 and 28 th days after hatching, the esophagus was positive for AB and Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) stain. The stomach was fully differentiated, with the cardiac, fundic and pyloric regions. Different regions of the epithelium were characterized by basic and acidic secreting cells (AB and PAS positive). On the 18 and 28 th days after hatching, the intestine was long, coiled and divided into proximal, middle and distal segments with pyloric ceca. Secreting cells in different regions of the gut were either positive or negative for AB and PAS. Results showed that larvae of P. argenteus exhibited digestive activity on the third day after hatching, with fully differentiated stomach and intestines on the 18 and 28 th days and their different regions featuring secreting cells.

Four microencapsulated diets were evaluated with respect to the growth and survival of tropical gar Atractosteus tropicus larvae. The treatments consisted of four experimental diets and one control diet 1) fish meal, 2) a combination of pork and poultry meals, 3) Nannochloropsis gaditana meal, 4) enzyme preparation and the control treatment 5) Artemia nauplii. The evaluation indicated that the larvae fed the Artemia nauplii obtained the greatest growth and survival (3.93 cm, 0.19 g y 82 % respectively), which justifies a correct culture system operation. While larvae fed microencapsulated diets best values in survival were observed with diets Nannochloropsis gaditana and enzyme preparation (20.0 and 19.2 %). Our results showed that microencapsulated could be used to feed A. tropicus in feasibly form. However, more information concerning to optimize the design and manufacturing are required to improve the growth and survival of organisms.

Technical and economic feasibility of food strategies in the hatchery of Cyprinus carpio (Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae) in a recirculating aquaculture system

In order to optimize the performance and reduce costs in the larviculture of ornamental carp (Cyprinus carpio) in a recirculating aquaculture system, different feeding strategies were tested. For this, two experiments were carried out both under controlled conditions in a greenhouse, in a recirculating aquaculture system with a physical particle filter, biofilter, and filtering by ultra-violet irradiation. In the first experiment, measurements of Artemia nauplii were tested in the initial exogenous feeding of larvae at concentrations of 100, 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1,000 Artemia nauplii per larvae. In the following experiment, different protocols were tested for initial feeding for larvae. At this stage, were used: live food (Artemia nauplii) and inert (powder meal), used separately and simultaneously, and increases in the number of Artemia nauplii were also tested, offered at different times of cultivation. In the first experiment, the amount of 600 Artemia nauplii for larvae demonstrated to be the best option as it generated significant growth and the cost was less than that observed with the use of 800 and 1000 Artemia nauplii per larvae. The second experiment demonstrated that the feeding strategy with live food more commercial inert feed provided the best growth performance for ornamental carp larvae. The need to fix the amount of live food during the cultivation, probably due to the high specific growth rates observed during the larval stage also became evident.
