Technical efficiency of goat farming in Turkey: a case study of Isparta province

-This study estimates the technical efficiency of goat rearing in the province of Isparta in Turkey using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The data used were collected from 92 goat farmers using the stratified sampling method by means of a questionnaire. The technical efficiency of the goat farming varied widely between 0.13 and 1.00. The mean efficiency of 92 goat farms was calculated to be 0.44 and 0.66 for constant and variable returns to scale assumptions, respectively. The greatest slacks were in feedstuff concentrates and labour used. The most significant factors affecting efficiency of goat production were farmer experience, cooperative membership, milk yield per goat, and family and hired labour. Technical efficiency should be improved by providing farmers with well-organised education, an extension program, and research and development programs on goat rearing.

RESUMOObjetivou-se realizar um estudo sobre o perfil de ácidos graxos e frações proteicas do leite de cabra. A principal característica da gordura desse leite é o alto teor de ácidos graxos de cadeia curta e média, que tem pelo menos duas vezes mais ácidos graxos C4-C10 do que o leite de vaca. Esses ácidos graxos possuem metabolismo diferente dos ácidos graxos de cadeia longa. As proteínas do leite de cabra são constituídas em média de 71% de caseínas, 22% de proteínas do soro (proteínas solúveis) e 7% de nitrogênio não proteico. Em comparação com o leite de vaca, o leite de cabra contém menos caseínas, mais proteínas séricas e mais nitrogênio não proteico. A identificação dos componentes do leite de cabra e a caracterização de suas propriedades poderão servir como ponto inicial para elaboração e implantação de programas para melhoria da qualidade do leite de cabra e seus derivados.Palavras-chave: caprino; gordura; proteína. The goat milk has as main characteristic the short and medium fatty acid chain (C4-C10) that is, at least as twice as much of that observed in cow milk. ABSTRACT:The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of citrus pulp addition and wilting on fermentative characteristics, chemical composition as well as gas and effluent losses of elephant grass silage. The elephant grass (70 growth days) was collected manually; one portion was immediately chopped and another one was allowed to wilt in the sun for a period of 6 h and subsequently chopped for the production of silage. Experimental PVC silos (10 cm diameter x 30 cm height) were used and sand bags were placed at the bottom of the silos. Citrus pulp (80 g kg -1 of MN) was added at the beginning of ensilage. The ensiled material was manually compressed to provide a specific mass of approximately 600 kg m -3 of silage. After 60 days, the silos were opened; gas and effluent losses were calculated and we determined pH, dry matter (DM), crude protein(CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), lignin, ammonia nitrogen, ash and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD). We added 0 or 80 g kg -1 of citrus pulp to wilted and un-wilted elephant grass. We used a completely randomised design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement (wilted or un-wilted) x (with or without citrus pulp), totalling treatments with five repetitions. Average values were compared using the F test with a probability of 5%. The addition of citrus pulp resulted in reduced levels of NDF, lignin, ash, N-NH 3 and pH and in increased values of DM and IVDMD of silages. Wilting increased the DM, NDF and lignin values and reduced the concentrations of CP, IVDMD and N-NH 3 . Based on our results, citrus pulp addition improves the chemical composition of elephant grass silage and increases its in vitro dry matter digestibility.
