Technical efficiency of goat farming in Turkey: a case study of Isparta province

Abstract: -This study estimates the technical efficiency of goat rearing in the province of Isparta in Turkey using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The data used were collected from 92 goat farmers using the stratified sampling method by means of a questionnaire. The technical efficiency of the goat farming varied widely between 0.13 and 1.00. The mean efficiency of 92 goat farms was calculated to be 0.44 and 0.66 for constant and variable returns to scale assumptions, respectively. The greatest slacks were in feedstuf… Show more

“…Model specificationDEA is a mathematical model using linear programming approaches to create a nonparametric piecewise surface (or frontier) across the data, so that efficiencies can be calculated in relation to this surface (Fig.1; 30). DEA was suggested in late seventies by Charnes et al(31); they set up a model of constant returns to scale (CRS) named the CCR. The model was later adjusted by Banker et al(32) to enable the presence of variant returns to scale (…”

“…Nowadays, extensive goat breeding is replaced by intensive goat breeding. Growing goat milk and goat meat industry with the increase in production and making this product in the most economical and high quality makes it important for the manufacturer and the consumer (Gül et al, 2016). It is very important for the boys who are obtained in the production season in the intensive enterprises to be produced with the quality of the carcass composition and the profitability of the producer in the free market and the sustainability of the operation.…”
