ABSTRACT. The aim of the study was to detect polymorphisms in the leptin gene and to determine the association of these polymorphisms with growth and carcass traits in Nellore cattle. The single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) -1457 (AJ571671:g.-1457A>G) and A59V (AF536174.1:g. 321C>T), as well as the microsatellite BM1500 (3.9 kb downstream), were genotyped. The measures of body weight and ultrasound examinations (rib eye area, back, and rump fat thickness) were performed in 3 different periods of animal management. During the first period, the animals were fed with grass and mineralized salt ad libitum. In the second period, they received grass and concentrate, and in the third, only concentrate. After the slaughter of animals, data were collected for classification and typification of carcasses. No significant association was found between the variables assessed and SNP -1457. Conversely, SNP A59V was associated with rump fat thickness and muscle color post-slaughter. -The aim of the present study was to analyze the interrelationships among the variables and also estimate the genetic correlations between tenderness (WBSF), growth (ILW, FLW and ADG) and carcass (BF, RF and LMA) features. Other purpose was to identify individuals who were more likely to be carriers of favorable genes for tenderness. Growth, carcass and tenderness data from 415 Polled Nellore animals was analyzed. Factor analysis and canonical correlations were used to analyze the phenotypic relationships. The covariance components and genetic parameters were estimated using Gibbs Sampling method. Lack of phenotypical correlations between the WBSF and the other traits were observed. The genetic correlations between WBSF and the other evaluated traits were of a low magnitude, with values of -0.15; -0.18; -0.13; 0.10; -0.12 and 0.18, between WBSF and ILW, FLW, ADG, BF, RF and LMA, respectively. The results support the conclusion that tenderness selection will not affect the selection of other economic traits and vice-versa, but for a better knowledge of the genetic relationships between meat tenderness and other traits for Polled Nellore more studies are required. The heritability estimated for WBSF was of a low magnitude (0.11 ± 0.022). Based on the principle of probability of identical genes by ancestry individuals who were more likely to be carriers of favorable genes for tenderness were identified. Further work will include creation of a segregating population that will serve as experimental material for future gene prospecting and identification research.Key works: Carcass. Shear force. Pedigree.RESUMO -Objetivou-se analisar os inter-relacionamentos entre as variáveis, além de estimar as correlações genéticas entre os grupos de características de maciez (FC), crescimento (PI, PF e GPD) e carcaça (EG, P8 e AOL). Foi proposto também, identificar indivíduos que apresentem alta probabilidade de serem portadores de genes favoráveis à maciez. Analisouse dados de 415 animais Nelore Mocho, filhos de touros representativos das principais linhagens Nelore, avaliados para características de crescimento, carcaça e maciez. Para análises de relacionamentos fenotípicos foram utilizadas análises de fatores e correlações canônicas. Os componentes de variância necessários à obtenção dos parâmetros genéticos foram estimados pelo método da Amostragem de Gibbs. Observou-se ausência de correlações fenotípicas entre FC e as outras características produtivas. As correlações genéticas entre FC e PI, PF, GPD, EG, P8 e AOL foram de baixa magnitude (-0,15; -0,18; -0,13; 0,10; -0,12 e 0,18). A seleção para a maciez não influenciará na seleção de outras características de interesse econômico e vice-versa, porém serão necessários mais estudos para melhor conhecimento sobre as relações genéticas da maciez e outras características produtivas em bovinos Nelore Mocho. RESUMO -Objetivou-se estudar as medidas de espessura de gordura subcutânea, área de olho-de-lombo, comprimento e profundidade máxima do músculo longissimus dorsi entre a 13 a costela e 1 a vértebra lombar determinadas por ultrassom e na carcaça de ovelhas de descarte abatidas em diferentes estágios fisiológicos, além dos coeficientes de correlação e determinação das medidas avaliadas. Utilizaram-se 21 ovelhas da raça Santa Inês, distribuídas nos seguintes grupos: OL = ovelhas que permaneceram por 60 dias em lactação com seus cordeiros e foram abatidas um dia após o desmame dos mesmos; OSC = ovelhas que permaneceram por 60 dias em lactação com seus cordeiros e mais 30 dias sem os cordeiros e foram posteriormente abatidas; e ONP = ovelhas que não pariram durante o ano. O comprimento máximo do músculo longissimus dorsi obtido pelo ultrassom e na carcaça dos animais não foi influenciado pelos estágios fisiológicos. O ultrassom pode ser utilizado com razoável precisão para estimar características da carcaça de ovelhas de descarte, em particular a espessura de gordura subcutânea.Palavras-chave: área de olho-de-lombo, características da carcaça, gordura subcutânea, longissimus dorsi, ovinos Correlations between in vivo measurements through ultrasound and on the carcass of discard ewesABSTRACT -The objective of this paper was to study subcutaneous fat thickness, loin eye area, length and maximum depth measurements of the longissimus dorsi muscle between the 13th rib and the 1st lumbar vertebra determined by ultrasound examination and on the carcass of discard ewes slaughtered in different physiological stages, besides correlation and determination coefficients among measurements evaluated. It was used 21 Santa Ines ewes distributed into the following treatments: EL = ewes that remained in lactation for 60 days with their respective lambs and slaughtered one day after weaning; EWL = ewes that remained in lactation for 60 days with their respective lambs one more period of approximately 30 days without the lambs and slaughtered afterwards; and ENC = ewes that did not give birth during the year. Results showed that the maximum length of the longissimus dorsi muscle obtained by ultrasound examination and on carcass of the animals were not influenced by the experimental treatments.
