Show more

“…Heritability estimations obtained for SC measured at 365 and 450 days of age were 0.41 and 0.44, respectively, similar to estimations described in the literature that, ranged from 0.42 to 0.53 Ferraz, 2002;Garnero et al, 2002;Albuquerque, 2003;Gianlorenço et al, 2003;Yokoo et al, 2007). These values were very similar, indicating that the used of the same selection intensity at both agesfavors the response for the selection of SC365 because genetic gains of this trait are associated to economic returns, with the choice of sexually precocious bulls fit for the breeding season.…”

“…This trait is considered of moderate to high heritability magnitude (0.24 to 0.67), indicating that early selection allows higher potential for genetic gain through direct selection (Gressler et al, 2000;Ferraz, 2000;Mercadante;Oliveira, 2000). SC has a favorable genetic association with other reproductive traits (Boligon et al 2010), also in females ( Van-Melis et al, 2010), as well as an association with scrotal circumference and productive traits (Yokoo et al, 2007).…”

“…-E-mail: danisio@fcav.unesp.br Scrotal circumference (SC) measurements can also be used as selection criteria in programs aiming to improve production efficiency, since they present medium to high heritability (Quirino and Bergmann, 1998;Gressler et al, 2000;Pereira et al, 2000;Silveira et al, 2004) and favorable genetic associations with production traits (Moser et al, 1996;Cyrillo et al, 2001;Garnero et al, 2001) and reproductive traits (Martin et al, 1992;Gressler et al, 2000;Gianlorenço et al, 2003;Boligon et al, 2007). Furthermore, because SC is an easily measured trait and can be measured at young ages (weaning, 365 days of age and 550 days of age), this makes it possible to identify animals that are genetically superior in relation to these traits.…”
