The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for body weight of beef cattle in performance tests. Different random regression models with quadratic B-splines and heterogeneous residual variance were fitted to estimate covariance functions for body weights of Nellore and crossbred Charolais × Nellore bulls. The criteria −2 residual log-likelihood (−2RLL), Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), and consistent AIC (CAIC) were used to choose the most appropriate model. For Nellore bulls, residual variance was modeled with six classes of age, and direct additive genetic and permanent environment effects were modeled with quadratic B-splines with two and one intervals, respectively. For crossbred bulls, quadratic B-splines with one interval fitted direct additive genetic and permanent environment effects and nine classes of age were needed to fit residual variance. Pooling classes of age with up to 40% in difference of residual variances does not compromise the fit of the model. Heritability for body weight in performance tests are moderate (>0.25, for crossbred bulls) to high (>0.5, for Nellore bulls) and genetic correlation between weights over the test are also high (>0.65). Then, selection of young bulls in performance test is an efficient tool to increase body weight in beef cattle.

BackgroundCentral testing is used to select young bulls which are likely to contribute to increased net income of the commercial beef cattle herd. We present genetic parameters for growth and reproductive traits on performance-tested young bulls and commercial animals that are raised on pasture and in feedlots.MethodsRecords on young bulls and heifers in performance tests or commercial herds were used. Genetic parameters for growth and reproductive traits were estimated. Correlated responses for commercial animals when selection was applied on performance-tested young bulls were computed.ResultsThe 90% highest posterior density (HPD90) intervals for heritabilities of final weight (FW), average daily gain (ADG) and scrotal circumference (SC) ranged from 0.41 to 0.49, 0.23 to 0.30 and 0.47 to 0.57, respectively, for performance-tested young bulls on pasture, from 0.45 to 0.60, 0.20 to 0.32 and 0.56 to 0.70, respectively, for performance-tested young bulls in feedlots, from 0.29 to 0.33, 0.14 to 0.18 and 0.35 to 0.45, respectively, for commercial animals on pasture, and from 0.24 to 0.44, 0.13 to 0.24 and 0.35 to 0.57 respectively, for commercial animals in feedlots. The HPD90 intervals for genetic correlations of FW, ADG and SC in performance-tested young bulls on pasture (feedlots) with FW, ADG and SC in commercial animals on pasture (feedlots) ranged from 0.86 to 0.96 (0.83 to 0.94), 0.78 to 0.90 (0.40 to 0.79) and from 0.92 to 0.97 (0.50 to 0.83), respectively. Age at first calving was genetically related to ADG (HPD90 interval = −0.48 to −0.06) and SC (HPD90 interval = −0.41 to −0.05) for performance-tested young bulls on pasture, however it was not related to ADG (HPD90 interval = −0.29 to 0.10) and SC (HPD90 interval = −0.35 to 0.13) for performance-tested young bulls in feedlots.ConclusionsHeritabilities for growth and SC are higher for performance-tested young bulls than for commercial animals. Evaluating and selecting for increased growth and SC on performance-tested young bulls is efficient to improve growth, SC and age at first calving in commercial animals. Evaluating and selecting performance-tested young bulls is more efficient for young bulls on pasture than in feedlots.

Objetivou-se verificar a contribuição da idade e peso no início do teste na análise genética do peso aos 550 dias, ganho médio diário, coeficiente de regressão linear do peso em função da idade, perímetro escrotal, volume testicular, e os escores de estrutura, precocidade e musculosidade de tourinhos Nelore em provas de ganho em peso (PGP) a pasto. Foram realizadas análises unicaracterísticas para estimação dos parâmetros, com quatro modelos estatísticos. No primeiro, foram incluídos os efeitos fixo de PGP e aleatório do valor genético aditivo. No segundo e terceiro também foram incluídos os efeitos da idade e peso no início do teste como covariáveis, respectivamente. No quarto modelo, foram incluídos os efeitos das duas covariáveis. As características de crescimento e reprodutivas apresentam herdabilidades moderadas e a seleção pode contribuir para modificar suas médias. As características de morfologia apresentam herdabilidades baixas e , dessa forma, a resposta à seleção pode ser lenta ao longo das gerações. As inclusões das covariáveis resultam em alterações nas variâncias, herdabilidades e valores genéticos. Os modelos com inclusão do peso e/ou idade inicial como covariáveis são parcimoniosos para avaliação genética de características de crescimento, reprodução e escores visuais de tourinhos Nelore em provas de ganho em peso a pasto.

Objetivou-se avaliar as características cinemáticas de potros nos saltos em liberdade, com sucesso ou insucesso. Foram avaliados 108 potros Brasileiro de Hipismo em cinco saltos, em liberdade, no obstáculo vertical com altura de 0,60 m aos 22-25 meses de idade; 0,80 m aos 29-32 meses de idade e 1,05 m aos 36-39 meses de idade.
